23rd with Mary Ward

Mary Ward inspired people at all times. She was a pioneer in her time and her charism and belief that God had a plan for her convinced her first companions to literally cross borders and search for new ways for women religious. Over the centuries, many women (and men) have followed Jesus in her footsteps.
The artwork we are sharing today is from Sr. Lorenzina. She lived in Italy and was one of the women who were deeply inspired by the way, Mary Ward chose to follow Jesus. She draw scenes from Mary Ward's life as a living proof of the deep impact Mary Ward's example had on her and so many others.

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed – so many crises, so many natural disasters, so many people in need of help. Mary Ward must certainly have known this feeling too. She left us some good advice: ‘Do your best, and God will help.’ Mary Ward was firmly convinced of this. And we, too, can rely on it today: God is by our side and will help us.
We are not alone. Alongside us, many others are striving to do God’s will, to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God, as we read in the prophet Micah.

Just because. No reason needed. Just love.

Today is "Just Because Day", a day to show kindness, celebrate friendship, and remind those we care about how much they mean to us. Not for a birthday. Not for an achievement. Just because.

Mary Ward, our foundress, understood this beautifully. She described herself as "apt for friendship" and offered this wisdom: "Let thy love be at all times rooted in God and then remain faithful to thy friends, value them highly, even more highly than thy life."

That's the spirit of our Mary Ward Family. We gather not because we must, but because we choose to. We support one another, our sisters, colleagues, companions, and friends across the globe, simply because we belong to each other.

Small acts matter: a message of encouragement, a listening ear, a shared laugh, a prayer. Kindness doesn't need a reason. Love is enough. Today, reach out to someone in your community or neighbourhood. Tell them they matter. Do something nice - just because.

Mary Ward said, I hope in God that it shall be seen that women in time to come will do much.

Pope Leo XIV has appointed new Consultors of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for the five-year term 2026–2031. Among the new Consultors are six consecrated women, one of them is Sr Patricia Murray CJ. The new consultants will advise the Dicastery which Sr Simona Brambilla MC presides as the first woman to lead a dicastery.
