Poverty is killing these children not Xeroderma itself. Rejoice lives in the village and borrowed a phone and forwarded this photo of her daughter who is already blind and having a growth on her Nose which is growing everyday. She can not afford to travel to Harare to get her daughter treated neither does she have money to pay medical bills. Sad reality of most XP children and their families🙏🏽

Of the 155 XP patients we have only about 4 who can afford to cater for their Sunscreen lotions, medical treatments and protective clothing. The rest are failing to even buy a single bottle of sunscreen. The unfortunate part is most of them come from a very poor background and live in remote areas.

Her name is Clarity Gochai 6 years old she lives in Epworth with her parents and 2 other Siblings. She is the only one in her family who has XP

This is Chibotu Munsaka and Twalumba Munsaka from Binga with their mother. Both children are living with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP).
They had an older brother, Budget Munsaka who also had Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

Unfortunately his condition was not properly managed, as he was the firstborn and the family did not yet understand the illness. He spent a lot of time in the sun playing, herding cattle and walking to school, which worsened his condition.

In search of help, the family visited traditional healers and prophets. By the time they were eventually referred to the hospital it was too late. He had developed skin cancers and sadly passed away.

After his passing, the family was blessed with another child Twalumba, who was also diagnosed with XP. The situation placed great strain on the family and Mr Munsaka eventually left, leaving the mother to care for Chibotu and Twalumba on her own.

I have realized in Zimbabwe that Xeroderma Pigmentosum is widely associated with witchcraft, people pointing fingers at each other. Sadly, most XP families are broken, leaving one partner to fend for the XP child and the rest of the kids, whilst the other partner leaves to start a new family with a new partner.
