π Happy Birthday, Chirikure Chirikure! π
Today, LitFest Harare celebrates the man whose words built the house we all gather in. Born on this day in 1962 in Gutu, Masvingo, Chirikure Chirikure is not just a poet β he is Zimbabwe's living literary institution.
A graduate of the University of Zimbabwe and an Honorary Fellow of the University of Iowa, Chirikure has spnt over four decades shaping the soul of Zimbabwean literature. He is the pioneer of professional performance poetry in Zimbabwe, blending Shona oral tradition with sharp political satire, mbira music, and storytelling in ways that have moved audiences from Harare to Berlin, Rotterdam, Norway, MedellΓn, and beyond.
His poetry collections β Rukuvhute (1989), Chamupupuri (1994), and Hakurarwi β We Shall Not Sleep (1998) β all claimed first prize at the Zimbabwe Writer of the Year Awards. Rukuvhute earned an Honourable Mention at the Nama Awards for Publishing in Africa, while Hakurarwi was named among the 75 Best Zimbabwean Books of the 20th Century and one of the Top 5 Shona Publications of the Century by the Zimbabwe International Book Fair.
Beyond the page, he served as a DAAD Artist in Berlin (2011), curated the HIFA Poetry CafΓ© for over five years, collaborated with legends like Oliver Mtukudzi and the late Chiwoniso Maraire, and worked as an editor at a major publishing house for 17 years.
And in 2014 β he founded LitFest Harare International Literature Festival, creating a permanent home for literary excellence on the African continent.
