Empowering Women Through Poultry, Savings, and Financial Literacy
In 2022, Ms. Muzawazi from Sakubva, Mutare, was part of a womenโs group supported by WLSA through an income-generating project. Through this support, the group of five women received 100 broiler chickens as a collective livelihood project.
At the beginning, the 100 chickens were kept collectively at Ms. Muzawaziโs fowl run. Over time, through commitment, teamwork, and reinvesting proceeds from chicken sales, the women were able to grow from one shared poultry project into individual poultry projects, with each member now keeping 100 chickens independently.
Building on this foundation, Ms. Muzawazi later benefited from the Making Tax Work for Women Project, implemented by WLSA with support from Christian Aid. Under the project, women in Sakubva received training on Internal Savings and Lending Schemes, debt management, and budgeting.
The training strengthened Ms. Muzawaziโs financial literacy and business management skills. It helped her better manage income from chicken sales, save consistently, control debt, budget for household needs, and reinvest in her poultry business.
As a result, Ms. Muzawazi has expanded her poultry project and now has 150 chicks. Income from poultry farming has enabled her to meet key household needs, including buying groceries, paying school fees for her children, purchasing household furniture, and renovating her home.
Ms. Muzawaziโs story is a reminder that when women have access to financial literacy, savings skills, and practical business support, they can turn small livelihood projects into sustainable sources of income for their families.
