Women and Law in Southern Africa - Zimbabwe Making the law work for women and girls in Zimbabwe. Contributing to gender equality and fulfilment o

WLSA conducts action research in the seven countries of Southern Africa namely Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The essence of action research is that we inform, advise and take action during the research. For instance when we formulated the project, the constitutional
reform process was not yet in place but we integrated it into the project since it is key to

the participation of women in politics and decision making. In essence, we educate women about their legal rights, providing legal advice, questioning and challenging the law.

Empowering Women Through Poultry, Savings, and Financial Literacy

In 2022, Ms. Muzawazi from Sakubva, Mutare, was part of a womenโ€™s group supported by WLSA through an income-generating project. Through this support, the group of five women received 100 broiler chickens as a collective livelihood project.

At the beginning, the 100 chickens were kept collectively at Ms. Muzawaziโ€™s fowl run. Over time, through commitment, teamwork, and reinvesting proceeds from chicken sales, the women were able to grow from one shared poultry project into individual poultry projects, with each member now keeping 100 chickens independently.

Building on this foundation, Ms. Muzawazi later benefited from the Making Tax Work for Women Project, implemented by WLSA with support from Christian Aid. Under the project, women in Sakubva received training on Internal Savings and Lending Schemes, debt management, and budgeting.

The training strengthened Ms. Muzawaziโ€™s financial literacy and business management skills. It helped her better manage income from chicken sales, save consistently, control debt, budget for household needs, and reinvest in her poultry business.

As a result, Ms. Muzawazi has expanded her poultry project and now has 150 chicks. Income from poultry farming has enabled her to meet key household needs, including buying groceries, paying school fees for her children, purchasing household furniture, and renovating her home.

Ms. Muzawaziโ€™s story is a reminder that when women have access to financial literacy, savings skills, and practical business support, they can turn small livelihood projects into sustainable sources of income for their families.

Helping girls walk into school with dignity, confidence and hope.

In Mbire, the journey to school often begins before sunrise. Many girls walk long distances to and from school, often without proper school shoes. During the rainy season, they walk through mud. In winter, they face the cold. In the hot season, the ground can be harsh beneath their feet.

For many girls, the journey is not only long, but it can be painful, unsafe and discouraging.

This daily reality is part of a wider challenge. Long distances, limited access to basic school needs, and limited access to the support girls need to stay safe and remain in school continue to affect their education and well-being.

A pair of school shoes may seem like a small thing, but for a girl already walking long distances, it can make a meaningful difference to her confidence, attendance and dignity.

Join 's Drop a Shoe Campaign and donate new or pre-loved school shoes for girls in Mbire and Mutare Rural.

Every pair donated is a step towards dignity, confidence and hope.

Drop a pair. Keep her in school.

Today, WLSA and Community Working Group on Health met with the Minister of Health and Child Care, Hon. Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, to brief him on the upcoming Reproductive Justice Baraza, scheduled for 3โ€“7 August 2026.

The Reproductive Justice Baraza is a continental platform designed to advance reproductive justice across Africa through strategic litigation.

It brings together legal professionals, civil society organizations, healthcare providers, and academics to confront the legal and systemic barriers that continue to deny vulnerable and marginalized communities, including women and girls, access to reproductive justice.

The Baraza will provide a space for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategy development aimed at dismantling discriminatory laws, harmful cultural practices, and legal frameworks that perpetuate inequality.

When communities act together, children are better protected.

Recently, WLSA facilitated a learning and exchange visit for community paralegals from Mafararikwa and Chipendeke in Mutare to strengthen community-led responses to GBV and child marriage.

A key lesson came from Mafararikwaโ€™s coordinated response model. When a child marriage case is reported or suspected, paralegals do not act alone. They mobilise a community response team that may include the sabhuku, school head, Ministry of Women Affairs, Department of Social Development, and other local actors.

Together, the team verifies the case, engages the family, and coordinates with relevant authorities to ensure the child safely returns home and is supported to continue their education.

For Chipendeke paralegals, this was a practical lesson in the power of collective action, referral pathways, and community leadership in protecting children.

Through peer learning, communities are strengthening coordinated protection systems that help children safely return home and continue their education.
