The Forum for African Women Educationalists – Zimbabwe (FAWEZI) is an affiliate to FAWE, a Pan-African organization based in Nairobi, Kenya.

🔵 This week, our Executive Director Lydia Madyirapanze is participating in the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) Forum 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together researchers, practitioners, advocates and policymakers from across the world to share evidence, strengthen learning and advance action to end violence against women and children.

Her participation comes at an important time for FAWEZI’s own work to generate evidence and strengthen action on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in higher education, particularly through the PROGEN-Hub for STEM research initiative, being implemented in partnership with Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) with support from the SVRI.

Through PROGEN-Hub for STEM, FAWEZI and BUSE are working with 11 Higher Education Institutions to understand GBV in STEM faculties and co-create practical, gender-transformative solutions, including mentorship, psychosocial support and a Gender-Transformative Digital Hub. The research seeks to generate evidence that can inform institutional and policy responses and contribute to safer, more inclusive STEM learning environments where women and girls can participate, lead and thrive.

Participation at the SVRI Forum 2026 therefore provides an opportunity to connect Zimbabwean evidence and experiences with global research and practice, strengthen learning and partnerships, and bring back knowledge that can contribute to the ongoing PROGEN-Hub research and FAWEZI’s wider advocacy for safe, equitable and quality education.

🔵 Honouring FAWE’s Founding Legacy

Today, FAWEZI led by FAWE Africa Executive Director Dr. Martha L. Muhwezi, together with FAWEZI Board Vice Secretary Caroline Dimingu, FAWEZI Executive Director Lydia Madyirapanze, and FAWE Africa Alumni Network Chairperson Wendy T. Muzite, paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Fay King Chung, former Minister of Education in Zimbabwe and one of the five women Ministers who founded FAWE in 1992.

The visit was a powerful full-circle moment, offering an opportunity to reconnect with the roots of a movement founded on the vision of a future where African girls and women have equal access to education and opportunities.
Dr. Fay’s legacy is more than history, it remains part of the living blueprint that continues to guide FAWE’s work and our mandate today.

🔵 Learning and strengthening pathways to opportunity.

As the FAWE/Mastercard Foundation Joint Monitoring and Learning Visit in Zimbabwe comes to a close, the delegation visited Belvedere Technical Teachers’ College (BTTC) for an engagement with the institution’s leadership, lecturers and programme participants.

The visit provided an opportunity to learn from the College’s experience in delivering technical teacher education, explore its STEM faculties and departments, and hear directly from programme participants about their experiences, aspirations and the opportunities created through the FAWE/Mastercard Foundation Phase II programme.

The engagement reinforced the value of creating spaces where institutions and young people can share experiences, identify lessons and inform how education pathways can become more inclusive, responsive and relevant to the aspirations of young women and men.

🔵 This week, FAWEZI is participating in the Joint Monitoring and Learning Visit in Zambia under the FAWE/Mastercard Foundation phase II programme.

Hosted by FAWE Zambia (FAWEZA), the joint visit brings together the Mastercard Foundation, FAWE Africa, FAWE Zambia and FAWE Zimbabwe, alongside programme participants and institutional focal persons, to reflect on programme implementation, share experiences and strengthen cross-country learning.

FAWEZI is represented by its Executive Director, Lydia Madyirapanze, and Field Officer, Sandra Rgwambiwa, alongside selected representatives from the Cohort 1 TVET bursary programme participants and institutional focal persons. Their participation provides an important platform for cross-country learning, reflection and the exchange of experiences and lessons from programme implementation.

Day 1 commenced with a joint engagement with Dr Kelvin Mambwe, Permanent Secretary – Education Services, Ministry of Education, Zambia, bringing together representatives from FAWE, the Mastercard Foundation, FAWEZA, FAWEZI, CAMFED, programme participants and institutional stakeholders.

The engagement focused on programme progress, implementation lessons and the importance of listening directly to young people as partners continue to strengthen second-chance education, TVET and tertiary pathways for young people facing barriers to education.

For FAWEZI, the visit is an opportunity to learn from experiences across countries, share lessons from Zimbabwe and amplify the voices and experiences of programme participants and institutions.

The joint monitoring and learning mission will continue with engagements with programme participants, institutions and key stakeholders, supporting continued learning and strengthening implementation across the programme.

🔵 Today, FAWEZI represented by its Programmes Manager Nqobile Nkiwane and Communication and Advocacy Officer Menard Ziko, engaged with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, to introduce FAWEZI’s work and explore opportunities for collaboration.

The Permanent Secretary acknowledged and appreciated the work being done by FAWEZI and expressed the Ministry’s readiness to provide support where needed.

The engagement presents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration and amplify stories that contribute to advancing equitable and quality education in Zimbabwe.

🔵 Today, FAWEZI is convening a one-day meeting to develop Terms of Reference (ToRs) and establish institutional core teams across 21 Higher and Tertiary Education Institutions (HTEIs) under the O3 PLUS Phase II Programme.

The meeting builds on the institutional policy review and discussions recently conducted, where gaps were identified across the key pillars of awareness, prevention and response, particularly in relation to Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Participating HTEIs are working to agree on priority policy gaps, establish dedicated core teams and develop practical roadmaps to strengthen, adopt and implement gender-responsive, student-centred and rights-based health and well-being policies.

🔵 Building safer, more inclusive and gender-responsive STEM spaces in Zimbabwe.

Through the PROGEN-Hub for STEM project, FAWEZI, in partnership with Bindura University of Science Education Official (BUSE), with support from the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), is working with 11 Higher Education Institutions to strengthen gender responsiveness and address Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in STEM faculties.

The project brings together gender-transformative mentorship, psychosocial support, participatory research and digital innovation to strengthen institutional responses to GBV and create supportive learning environments where women and girls can participate, lead and thrive in STEM.

We are working towards lasting institutional and policy change for safer, more inclusive STEM education in Zimbabwe.
