Drug & Substance Abuse: Temperance and Community Resilience
Zimbabwe, like many other countries, is faced with the increasing challenge of drug and substance abuse among its young people. The crisis is not just a health issue but also a social issue that impacts family structures, community safety, and national development.
There have been rising cases of addiction, violence and social harm that have been linked to excessive consumption of alcohol and the misuse of substances such as mutoriro and musombodhiya. Families are often fractured and communities are struggling to hold on to safe and inclusive spaces.
But there is hope.” There are some signs of shifting perceptions due to balance and moderation campaigns and educational efforts. Community-led projects – from youth awareness initiatives to church-based interventions – are encouraging responsible socialising and reducing isolation.
I’ve been a journalist and researcher and have seen how storytelling can amplify such efforts. Lived experience and prevention work can also be used to challenge harmful norms and inspire healthier choices. Moderation is not about denial. It is about empowerment. It is about making celebrations and social connections work to strengthen communities, not weaken them.
Ultimately, the fight against drug and substance abuse is a fight for dignity, inclusion and resilience. Through education, responsible service and collective action, we can make social environments safer for youth to thrive.
