Tradition is often discussed as though preserving the past and embracing change are necessarily opposites.

They aren't.

Inherited practices can carry identity, memory, social cohesion and institutional knowledge. But the same continuity can make established arrangements difficult to challenge particularly when those arrangements produce exclusion or injustice.

So perhaps the more interesting question is:

How do we preserve what gives a society meaning without preserving what prevents it from changing?

“Socialism” is often treated as if it describes one single political and economic position. It doesn’t.

Different socialist traditions have developed different answers to some fundamental questions:

Who should own productive resources?
How much should markets shape economic life?
What role should democratic politics play?
How should wealth and economic power be distributed?
And what role should workers have in organising production?

Marxism, democratic socialism, social democracy, and syndicalist/cooperative traditions therefore deserve to be understood on their own terms rather than collapsed into one definition.

The more carefully we examine political ideas, the easier it becomes to move beyond labels and ask what people actually mean.

When the economy grows, who actually benefits?

Capitalism is often defended for its ability to coordinate economic activity, encourage investment, reward innovation, and generate wealth.

But creating wealth and distributing wealth are not the same thing.

Who owns the wealth?
Who bears the risks?
Who benefits from growth?
What happens to people with little bargaining power?

And perhaps the most important question:

Can an economy create more wealth while becoming less equal in who has the power to shape it?

What happens when political ideas move from theory into real institutions?

Liberal ideas have shaped debates around constitutions, representation, civil liberties, property rights, the rule of law, and limits on state power.

But having liberal ideas on paper does not automatically produce a liberal government. Different governments can interpret freedom, equality, rights, markets, and state intervention in very different ways.

That leads to a deeper question:

Who gets protected by the rules, and who is left outside them?

Tradition can hold a society together. But can it also hold a society back?

One of the central questions raised by conservatism is what a society should preserve:

its institutions, traditions, social bonds, laws and accumulated wisdom.

But preservation becomes complicated when tradition is used to defend arrangements that cause exclusion, deny dignity or resist change simply because change feels threatening.

That doesn't mean everything should be replaced. It means we need to ask a more difficult question:

How do we distinguish valuable traditions from unjust ones?

A thoughtful society needs both memory and the capacity to change.

Political ideas are not just theories. They shape the world we live in.

We often talk about politics through personalities, elections and political parties.

But underneath all of that are ideas.

Ideas about power. Justice. Economics. Institutions. Society. Freedom.

Those ideas influence the choices societies make. Those choices shape institutions. Institutions shape people's lives.

And that is why political literacy matters.

The real question is not simply, "What do you believe?"

It is:

Why do you believe it?
Where did the idea come from?
Who does it serve?
What happens when it becomes policy?
And what kind of society does it ultimately create?

At BLAC, we believe understanding the ideas behind power is part of understanding the world itself.

Know the ideas. Question everything. Think critically.

We need to get better at recognising the difference between meaningful change and the appearance of change.

A young person sitting in a room is not necessarily participating.

A woman being invited into a meeting does not automatically mean she has influence.

Changing a visible symptom does not necessarily mean the system has changed.

Following a charismatic personality is not the same as understanding the ideas, principles and institutions behind them.

And believing that Africa's future will be built by someone else is a very different proposition from building it ourselves.

These questions may be uncomfortable, but serious leadership requires us to ask them.

What does it actually mean to be globally minded?

It isn’t simply knowing about different countries, following international news, or being interested in the world.
It’s a practice.

A practice of looking beyond the obvious.
Of seeking context before conclusions.
Of listening to perspectives different from your own.

Of staying curious when the easy answer is right in front of you.
In this visual, that practice starts with something simple: don’t stop at the headline.

Because being globally minded is not a personality trait. It is a practice.

And knowing how to practice it is kinda chic.

Africa’s resource story cannot stop at extraction.

Minerals can leave the ground without creating enough broad based prosperity if the value chain remains concentrated elsewhere.

That is why the conversation has to move beyond:

“What resources does Africa have?”

and toward:

“Who owns them, who processes them, who controls the technology, and who benefits from the value created?”

Fair contracts, revenue collection, community protection, skills development, infrastructure, research, and regional collaboration all shape what resource wealth can become.

The question at the heart of this visual story is ultimately about the future:

If research capacity is the foundation of future power, what should Africa prioritise first: funding, universities, laboratories, talent retention, or regional collaboration?
