Life is what you make it….
As we get older, we all deal with health issues in one way or another. But it’s not just about what we’re struggling with- it’s about how we respond to it. Seniors often face incredible hurdles: recovering from strokes, enduring chronic pain, and going through tough physiotherapy. It can be exhausting physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I understand that vulnerability firsthand. When I was 25, I went through an ACL knee reconstruction. The surgery changed me. My confidence was shaken, and going through a period of total dependency was incredibly hard on both me and my loved ones. I remember having very real fears: If there is a fire, how will I escape? If I am attacked, how will I run?
Through my hospital and pastoral work, and now working with seniors in rural areas at Simuka Wellness, I’ve learned something profound: those fears aren't just for 25-year-olds recovering from surgery. Seniors feel this every single day. They just want to be independent, do things for themselves, and be actively involved in life.
Because life is what you make it, I’ve invited Occupational Therapist Kerry Carlisle to talk about how seniors can safely navigate life and pain. Sometimes, all it takes is a little knowledge to empower ourselves.
For example, did you know that everyday environments like our bathrooms and bedrooms- hold hidden risks that can lead to severe injuries and fractures for seniors?
This discussion is for everyone. If you are a senior, or if you live with and love one, you need to be part of this conversation. As life changes, we need to change and adapt with it.
