Things are happening in Mt. Darwin | Strengthening Farmer Value Chains!!!

When you see produce at the market places, that is only part of the story. Follow us as progress on the ground continues in Mt. Darwin as the Ward-level Sesame aggregation hubs are being set-up and utilised. On the other hand, the construction of grading shed structures takes shape within the garden spaces.

These facilities are being set up to support aggregation directly from the field and gardens, thus creating a more organized, efficient system for handling produce right at the source.

World Food Programme, partnering with Sustainable Agriculture Technology Zimbabwe, we are bringing improved post-harvest handling and storage conditions, increased shelf life, and preservation of both quality and quantity.

This initiative is part of building Village Business Units (VBUs) within ward-level aggregation centres and garden hubs across:
πŸ“Œ Ward 1 – Kaitano.
πŸ“Œ Ward 4 – Murongwe.
πŸ“Œ Ward 38 – Karanda.

With these systems in place, farmers can confidently conduct market assessments at nearby business centres, knowing their produce remains well-preserved and market-ready.
Step by step, we are strengthening rural value chains and enabling farmers to capture more value from their hard work.

Strengthening Climate-Smart Vegetable Production in Chiredzi District.

In Chiredzi District, farmers in Ward 2 (Hama garden) and Ward 4 (Bandama garden) are applying knowledge gained from recent capacity-building trainings to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability. Through guided learning on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), farmers are enhancing crop performance while promoting environmentally responsible farming.

At Hama Garden, farmers are actively managing diversified vegetable plots including cabbage, r**e, and other horticultural crops, applying improved agronomic practices to optimize yields and maintain crop health. In Bandama Garden, tomato production is benefiting from the adoption of similar practices, with farmers implementing more efficient and climate-conscious production techniques.

Through the application of these approaches, farmers are progressively reducing reliance on chemical pesticides, lowering production costs, and promoting safer, more sustainable crop protection methods.

With support from Japan - The Government of Japan, through the World Food Programme farmers are ticking these boxes;
βœ… Improved crop productivity and quality through GAP adoption,
βœ… Reduced input costs through integrated pest management,
βœ… Enhanced resilience to climate variability through CSA practices,
βœ… Safer and more sustainable farming systems.

These efforts reflect a growing shift towards knowledge-driven, market-oriented, and climate-resilient agriculture, strengthening the capacity of smallholder farmers to build sustainable livelihoods.
