At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, we are rooted in Ubuntu, the understanding that our humanity is bound together through care, presence, and shared responsibility. We believe that leadership is not defined by age, but by the courage to respond where there is need.
As young people, we are choosing to stand in the gap, honouring the generations that carried us while shaping a future that remembers its past with dignity. In Checheche, our team gathered not just to give, but to connect, to listen, and to reaffirm that no elder should walk their later years alone.
Across Mahachi and Konjana villages, we had the privilege of spending time with remarkable women whose lives carry history, resilience, and wisdom. In Mahachi, we visited Gogo Pambuka and Gogo Chiturumane, who at 104 years stands as a living testament to time, strength, and grace. In Konjana, we connected with Gogo Raisi, sharing moments that remind us that presence is often the most powerful form of care.
What made this outreach even more meaningful is that it was powered by the hands and hearts of young volunteers. This is the culture we are building, one where responsibility is embraced, not assigned, where giving is not measured only in material support, but also in time, conversation, and genuine human connection.
We brought food and essentials, but more importantly, we brought companionship. Because sometimes support looks like provision, and other times it looks like sitting down, listening, and reminding someone that they are seen and valued.
We continue to affirm that ageing is not a disease, it is a sacred stage of life, a special grace that deserves honour, protection, and love.
A special appreciation goes to our Checheche branch trailblazer, Ashley Sakara, for leading this initiative with heart, vision, and commitment. This is what it means to make things work, grounded in community, driven by purpose, and sustained through collective action.
