The Next Step… A Practical Guide for New Volunteers (Online)

At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, the elderly are at the center of all we do, and we work with young people to achieve this, which is why we stand firmly in our mantra, Young for the Elderly.

We are not just building volunteers, we are shaping responders. Young people who understand how to feel, how to act, and how to ask, what can we do now?

This is how we build a generation rooted in dignity, legacy, and sustainable impact.

At the heart of Hibiscus Dotage Foundation is Ubumbano, a spirit of togetherness where generations meet through care, presence, and dignity.

One of our Ambuya is 104 years old, living alone. Some days cooking is difficult, and life can feel very quiet. Every week, our volunteers go to check on her, not as visitors, but as extended family.

We sit with her, talk with her, help where we can, and simply remind her: “Ambuya, you are not alone.”

This is what community looks like in action. It is young people standing with the marginalised, turning concern into consistent care.

Our vision is simple: that every elderly person is regularly checked on, loved, and supported by young people within their own communities. Not occasionally, but intentionally, consistently, and with dignity.

Through Ubumbano, we are rebuilding belonging, one home, one conversation, one elder at a time.

At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, we are rooted in Ubuntu, the understanding that our humanity is bound together through care, presence, and shared responsibility. We believe that leadership is not defined by age, but by the courage to respond where there is need.

As young people, we are choosing to stand in the gap, honouring the generations that carried us while shaping a future that remembers its past with dignity. In Checheche, our team gathered not just to give, but to connect, to listen, and to reaffirm that no elder should walk their later years alone.

Across Mahachi and Konjana villages, we had the privilege of spending time with remarkable women whose lives carry history, resilience, and wisdom. In Mahachi, we visited Gogo Pambuka and Gogo Chiturumane, who at 104 years stands as a living testament to time, strength, and grace. In Konjana, we connected with Gogo Raisi, sharing moments that remind us that presence is often the most powerful form of care.

What made this outreach even more meaningful is that it was powered by the hands and hearts of young volunteers. This is the culture we are building, one where responsibility is embraced, not assigned, where giving is not measured only in material support, but also in time, conversation, and genuine human connection.

We brought food and essentials, but more importantly, we brought companionship. Because sometimes support looks like provision, and other times it looks like sitting down, listening, and reminding someone that they are seen and valued.

We continue to affirm that ageing is not a disease, it is a sacred stage of life, a special grace that deserves honour, protection, and love.

A special appreciation goes to our Checheche branch trailblazer, Ashley Sakara, for leading this initiative with heart, vision, and commitment. This is what it means to make things work, grounded in community, driven by purpose, and sustained through collective action.

Volunteering with Heart: Celebrating Raymond Kwashivari

Meet Raymond Kwashivari, affectionately known as The Bulldozer, always ready to show up and serve. He doesn’t want to be told; he asks, “Where am I needed? What can I do?” That spirit captures exactly what it means to be a volunteer at Hibiscus Dotage Foundation.
Raymond is a driving force behind the Muzukuru project, bringing energy, dedication, and a heart for impact. When asked what volunteering means to him, he said: “Caring for the elderly is not charity, it is gratitude for the paths they paved.”

A second-year engineering student, Raymond exemplifies our commitment to nurturing young, socially responsible leaders who step up, take initiative, and create meaningful change. In this season, as we wrap up our applications, we want to celebrate Raymond and the incredible work he is doing.

We are proud to have you on the team, Bulldozer, your dedication inspires us all. And the best part? There are many more young people like you ready to carry this mission forward.

More Than Words. It Is Presence. It Is Partnership.

At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, care takes many forms. For some, it begins with a word, a simple conversation that restores dignity. For others, it is presence, showing up, sitting down, and truly listening. And for many, it is action, helping with daily chores, easing the load, and practically providing where there is need.

Today, our team was in Ruwa visiting our beloved Gogo Nyambe, who is raising five grandchildren. Before anything else, we sat. We created space. We listened, not to respond, but to understand. Because at Hibiscus, we believe every elderly person carries a lifetime of wisdom, and listening is the first act of restoration.

Today’s support came in the form of food hampers, ensuring that immediate needs are met while we continue building long term, sustainable systems of care around our elderly.

To our volunteers, you are the heartbeat of this movement. Thank you for choosing impact, for choosing people, and for choosing to serve with intention.

Volunteer applications are still open. Join a community that is building a future where no elderly person is forgotten, where care is sustainable, and where dignity remains non negotiable.

Standing With Our Elders: Practical Support in Action

At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, we hold a simple conviction: we cannot speak about giving if we are not prepared to give ourselves. This belief is not a slogan; it is a discipline we practice together. Whenever we gather, we begin with one honest question: before we look outward for help, what can we do with the little we already have? In that spirit, we see ourselves as the first responders to the needs within our own communities. It is a reflection of Ubuntu—the understanding that our humanity is fulfilled through caring for one another.

Guided by this ethos, our work continues to place the dignity and welfare of the elderly at the centre. Under our pillar of Practical Support, we recently( Today) spent time in Mufakose visiting Gogo Mukanya, a 78-year-old grandmother living with a disability while raising her three grandchildren. With no stable income and limited support, her daily life is a quiet act of resilience. As young people committed to standing with our elders, we arrived with a simple message: Gogo, you are not alone.

Caring for our elders remains a reflection of who we are as a community. By standing with them, we honour their legacy and affirm a future where dignity, compassion, and shared responsibility guide the wellbeing of every generation.

We remain committed to a simple question that guides every visit, every intervention, every initiative: How does this improve the welfare and dignity of our elders?

At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, everything we do begins and ends with the elderly. Yet in walking closely with them, a difficult truth revealed itself. Many of the elders we serve have become parents again, raising their grandchildren and other orphaned children. Their love is unwavering, but the responsibility is heavy. That is how the Muzukuru Project was born. Not as a shift away from elderly welfare, but as a way to protect it. In strengthening the child, we are strengthening the elder.

We are deeply grateful that this work has been recognized and shared by the African Philanthropy Network, a continental platform championing African philanthropy and people-led development since 2009. Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to Tanatsiiwa Dambudza for shining a light on this story.

To our volunteers, supporters, mentors, and every well-wisher who continues to walk this journey with us — thank you. The Muzukuru Project is a collective effort rooted in care, dignity, and intergenerational responsibility.

Yesterday the world marked International Women’s Day. Today, we continue the celebration, intentionally.

At Hibiscus Dotage Foundation, celebrating women is not confined to a date on the calendar. It is part of our culture and the way we build community every day. We honour the elderly women who carry wisdom and resilience, the mothers who nurture generations, the aunties who hold families together, and the young women volunteers who give their time and heart to serve others.

Our Chairman, Panashe Pemhiwa, often says that society is not inherently male-dominated. Rather, decisions made in the past often placed men in positions of influence. When we intentionally create space, women lead, build, and transform communities just as powerfully.

That commitment is reflected in our work: 80% of our initiatives are women-led, and 60% of our volunteers are women. Their leadership, compassion, and dedication continue to shape the impact we create in communities.
So even a day later, we remain intentional in saying: we celebrate our elderly women and our young women volunteers. Your presence, leadership, and love continue to shape the future.
