16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: UNiTE TO END DIGITAL VIOLENCE AGAINST ALL WOMEN & GIRLS

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, commemorated globally from 25 November to 10 December each year, has once again placed a powerful spotlight on the urgent need to eliminate violence against women and girls. This year’s international theme, UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls, calls attention to the rapid rise of online abuse, including harassment, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, image-based abuse and the weaponisation of technology to silence, shame and harm women across the continent.

Gender-based violence continues to be one of the most devastating human rights crises in Africa. According to recent World Health Organization findings, nearly one in three women globally, an estimated 840 million, has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime. Many African countries mirror or exceed this global average. In East Africa, prevalence remains high in several national studies; in West Africa, countries such as Nigeria and Sierra Leone have recorded significant levels of intimate partner and domestic violence; in Central Africa, conflict-related sexual violence remains a severe threat; and Southern Africa carries some of the highest femicide burdens in the world.

In South Africa, the crisis has escalated to such an extent that, in November 2025, the government formally declared gender-based violence and femicide a national disaster. This decision was driven by years of public pressure, national protests and alarming data showing the scale of the emergency. South Africa consistently reports some of the highest femicide rates globally, and activists have highlighted that roughly fifteen women die daily from gender-based violence based on recent civic reporting. Official oversight reports also indicate the magnitude of sexual offences in the country, with more than fifty thousand cases recorded in a single reporting year, figures that represent only a fraction of the true prevalence due to widespread under-reporting.

Digital violence has emerged as a rapidly growing frontier of abuse. UN Women has emphasised that online spaces have become increasingly unsafe for women and girls, with digital platforms being used to harass, monitor, threaten and humiliate victims. The 2025 theme reflects the urgent need for policy, advocacy and technological reforms to protect women’s rights both offline and online.

In the midst of this continental and global emergency, Arise Women of Africa stands firmly and unapologetically against all forms of gender-based violence, physical, emotional, sexual, economic and digital. As a movement dedicated to shaping a safer and more empowered future for African women, Arise Women of Africa continues to champion survivor-centred responses, stronger legislation, community awareness, accountability mechanisms and the societal transformation urgently required to end GBV in our time.

The 16 Days of Activism serve as a powerful reminder that ending gender-based violence is not a campaign of words but a continental duty that demands action, unity and unwavering commitment. Arise Women of Africa calls on every government, institution, community and citizen to play an active role in building a future where every woman and girl lives free from fear, violence and discrimination.

“shaping the future of Africa, One woman at a time.”
