From evidence to action.
Women drive agriculture, economies, and resilience in Zimbabwe, yet many still lack control over land, income, and decisions.

CARE Zimbabwe in partnership with Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Dev. convened a multi-stakeholder International Women’s Day Policy Dialogue under the theme “From Evidence to Action”, bringing together government, UN agencies, development partners, civil society, women’s rights organisations, male gender champions , private sector, and community leaders from from Bikita , Buhera, Thsolotsho, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Beitbridge and Chivi. The dialogue highlighted a critical reality: while policy frameworks exist, gaps in implementation and financing continue to limit impact.

The dialogue emphasized the urgent need to:
*Align financing, evidence, and partnerships focusing on local and pooled financing;
*Invest in gender-transformative and climate-resilient solutions;
*Strengthen inclusive systems that address GBV, economic inequality, and climate vulnerability.

Together, we are advancing a shared agenda: Moving from policy commitments → to financed, scalable action → to transformation

From Buhera to Tsholotsho, the Sustainable Roots Project (SRP) is strengthening nutrition for children and women through community led, sustainable solutions. The project is being implemented by CARE Zimbabwe together with ORAP Zimbabwe and Nutrition Action Zimbabwe, is running until 2029, supporting over 22,500 people, with a strong focus on impact beyond the project life.
Recently , the SRP convened a Sustainability Plan review and validation workshop with government line ministries and partners from both Buhera and Tsholotsho Districts. Together, we focused on one key question: How do we ensure program gains last long after implementation ends?
At the core of the plan is a shared commitment to:
✅ Strengthen community resilience through household food production
✅ Improve health and nutrition for women of child-bearing age and children under two
✅ Help communities sustain the behaviours and practices that support resilient food systems
The SRP sustainability plan is underpinned by strong ownership, alignment, and collaboration from all partners because for SRP, sustainability is not about project closure; it’s about lasting systems and partnerships.

Celebrating women who dare to be bold. Meet Deliverance (19), Constance (18), Alpha (23) and Tariro (32) , four of six young women who were trained and recently graduated through the Building Resilience and Enhancing Food Security Project (JSB), implemented by CARE and UNDP with support from the Embassy of Japan in Zimbabwe /在ジンバブエ日本国大使館 and in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training

They chose a path few women take: welding.
With tuition support, training , starter kits from the project and their courage to try something different, they are stepping into independence and building skills that can transform their futures.
When you choose courage, you create opportunities.

In Tsholotsho, some women carry the weight of feeding their families, yet low rainfall and long dry seasons is making that responsibility even harder. During dry periods, they often travel long distances in search of water as boreholes run dry. Meet Idah Sibanda from Ward 19, for years, poor harvests caused by recurring droughts made it difficult for her to feed her family and grandchildren.

Through the training and technical support she received from the Sustainable Roots Program (SRP), Idah is now using water harvesting and resilience farming methods that reduce water use and time spent in the garden. This has led to better harvests, more nutritious food, and most importantly time to rest.

Idah is one of the 2️⃣5️⃣7️⃣5️⃣ farmers who were trained and have adopted soil and water conservation practices in Buhera and Tsholotsho Rural Districts through the project.

Implemented by CARE Zimbabwe together with ORAP ZORAP ZimbabweritNutrition Action ZimbabweSustainable Roots Programme is helping women farm smarter, not harder.

Last week the CBA SCALE Southern Africa+ project welcomed a technical support and field visit from CARE Deutschland e.V., IUCN Regional Head of Land Systems & Kenya Country Representative alongside CARE Zimbabwe leadership. The visit brought to life how community-based adaptation is creating real, lasting change on the ground. From household biogas systems providing clean, reliable energy for cooking, to innovative local financing and forest restoration efforts, communities are leading the way in building climate resilience.

These solutions are not only reducing pressure on forests but also improving health and easing the daily burden on women and children. Across the project areas, communities are proving that when local solutions are supported, resilience grows stronger for everyone.

In Zimbabwe the project is coordinated by CARE Zimbabwe and is implemented by a consortium of five partners: CARE Zimbabwe, ICRISAT, Southern Alliance For Indigenous Resources-SAFIRE, IUCN, & Cesvi Onlus Cesvi Zimbabwe funded by Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety & Consumer Protection through the International Climate Initiative (BMUV-IKI) and managed by CARE Germany, the initiative continues to drive inclusive, community led climate action across Southern Africa (Mozambique, Zambia & Zimbabwe).
