I was a teenage mother, and when I discovered I was pregnant, I was afraid. I hid my pregnancy from my parents for five months because I did not know how they would react.
When my parents eventually found out, my mother supported me and helped me through the next steps. She took me to Mother’s Comfort, where I received the support I needed to register for antenatal care at a local clinic.
The father of my baby had denied responsibility, so the support I received from my mother and Mother’s Comfort was especially important during this difficult time.
Once my pregnancy was registered, I began attending my antenatal appointments and classes regularly.
During my second trimester, I discovered that I was anaemic, something I had not known before. I received treatment and guidance to help manage the condition and was given folic acid.
My antenatal classes taught me so much. I learned how to take care of my health during pregnancy, what to expect during labour and what would be expected of me during childbirth. I was also taught how to care for my baby after giving birth.
The knowledge I gained, together with the support from my family and Mother’s Comfort, gradually changed how I felt about my pregnancy.
For the first five months, I had struggled to accept that I was pregnant. But as I received support, gained knowledge and prepared for motherhood, I began to embrace the journey.
Today, I love my son deeply.
What began as an unwanted pregnancy became a journey that taught me about motherhood, responsibility and the importance of having a strong support system.
“The pregnancy was unwanted at first, but through the support I received and the knowledge I gained, I learned to embrace motherhood.
