WHAWHA OFFICERS, INMATES GRADUATE IN SIGN LANGUAGE

Seventy Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officers and inmates at Whawha Medium Prison graduated on 10 July 2026 after completing a five-day Sign Language Training Programme conducted by Sunrise Sign Language Academy.

The graduates comprised 50 officers from Whawha Medium Prison, Whawha Young Offenders Prison and Whawha Workshops, as well as 20 inmates from Whawha Medium Prison and Whawha Young Offenders Prison.

Guest of Honour Superintendent Thandani Ndlovu, Staff Officer for Rehabilitation and Integration in Midlands Province, said the programme promoted inclusion and strengthened rehabilitation.

"Today's graduation is more than the completion of a course. It represents the breaking down of communication barriers and the building of bridges of understanding. By equipping officers and inmates with sign language skills, we are putting into practice the national vision of leaving no one and no place behind," he said.

Officer in Charge of Whawha Medium Prison, Superintendent Tinei Isaiah Makeredza, said effective communication was the foundation of understanding, cooperation and mutual respect.

"Effective communication is the foundation of understanding, cooperation and mutual respect. Through sign language, we are ensuring that no one is left behind," he said.

Sunrise Sign Language Academy Founder and Chairman Douglas Mapeta said sign language improved access to justice and essential services while creating educational and career opportunities.

"Communication barriers deny people access to justice and essential services. Whawha has demonstrated that rehabilitation must begin from within. Graduates can advance to certificate, diploma, degree and master's studies in sign language, opening opportunities in courts, banking and other professions," he said.

Delivering the vote of thanks, inmate representative Rapture Huni expressed gratitude to ZPCS and Sunrise Sign Language Academy, saying the knowledge gained would continue to benefit participants during incarceration and after reintegration into society.
