Meet Getrude Muchekenya, a resident of Mbare, Zimbabwe. For Getrude, the onset of illness was deceptively ordinary. What began as a persistent cough, dismissed as a routine flu, rapidly escalated into alarming shortness of breath. For four months, she lived in a state of physical decline and mounting anxiety, searching for answers to a mystery that felt increasingly dire.

It was the persistence of her mother that finally led Getrude to the Edith Clinic. There, a professional screening and diagnostic test provided the clarity she had been desperate for: a diagnosis of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB).
While many would be devastated by such news, Getrude experienced a profound sense of relief. After months of unbearable symptoms, the diagnosis transformed her fear into focus. She finally knew what she was fighting.

The road to recovery, however, was paved with complex challenges that extended far beyond the clinical regimen. In her community, misinformation took root; baseless rumors began to circulate, claiming her illness was a consequence of a moral failing rather than a bacterial infection. Tragically, these stigmatizing narratives reached her own home, deeply affecting her father’s perception of her condition.

Throughout this isolating period, Getrude’s mother stood as an unwavering pillar of support. She provided the emotional strength Getrude needed to navigate both the rigorous demands of DR-TB treatment and the social alienation of her community. When the clinical side effects became difficult to manage, it was this support, combined with the consistent guidance provided by the team at Edith Clinic, that kept her on the path to recovery.

Today, Getrude is fully cured. Having successfully navigated the dual challenges of a complex medical diagnosis and societal stigma, she has reclaimed her health and her life. Looking forward, she is filled with hope and ambition, with her sights set on returning to school to continue her education.

Getrude’s journey is a powerful testament to the necessity of early diagnosis, the life-saving impact of accessible healthcare, and the transformative power of a supportive family in the face of adversity.

Today, as we commemorate , let’s shine a light on an important but often misunderstood issue of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (DR TB).

What is DR TB?
Drug-resistant TB happens when the TB germ no longer responds to the medicines that usually cure TB. This can happen when people don’t finish treatment, take medicines incorrectly, or when the TB germ is already resistant from the start.
But the good news is: DR TB can be cured.
👥 Why should communities care?
Because TB affects all of us. It spreads through the air when someone with TB coughs or sneezes. Anyone can get TB, but everyone can help stop it.

What can we do?
✔️ Learn the symptoms: cough of any duration, weight loss, night sweats, fever, chest pain.
✔️ Seek care early: Early testing saves lives.
✔️ Complete treatment: Even when you start feeling better.
✔️ Support people with TB: Stigma stops people from getting help. Kindness saves lives.

🏥 DR TB treatment is free in Zimbabwe at public health facilities. No one should suffer in silence.

Today, we honor those who are fighting TB, those we have lost, and the champions working every day to end this disease.

Let’s raise our voices and remind our communities that TB is preventable, treatable, and curable — including DR TB.

💛 On this World TB Day, let’s commit to awareness, compassion, and action.
Together, we can achieve a TB-free Zimbabwe.

📍 Harare,

Thanks to Unitaid, through KELIN, we are currently hosting a Community Consultation today to present the MAF and solicit feedback on the DRTB findings and recommendations. The meeting is bringing together communities, CSOs, DR TB survivors, NTP, media, and partners to strengthen accountability and address critical gaps in DR TB service delivery.

This consultation provides a platform to:
🔸 Review national progress towards UNHLM & End TB targets
🔸 Share key findings from the DR TB care cascade analysis
🔸 Gather community-driven recommendations
🔸 Strengthen community-led accountability mechanisms

A strong TB response is only possible when communities lead, inform, and shape the solutions. Together, we work towards ending TB and ensuring no one is left behind.

Drug-resistant TB (DR TB) remains one of the most urgent challenges in the fight to . As we approach World TB Day, we are reminded that while treatment is possible, the journey for people affected by DR TB is longer, tougher, and demands stronger community support.

DR TB not only affects the individual, it affects families, schools, workplaces, and entire communities. Ending it requires awareness, early diagnosis, access to quality treatment, and a united, stigma-free environment where survivors are supported, not judged.

In honor of World TB Day, we stand with:
• TB survivors who fought through the hardest treatment journeys
• Families and caregivers who walked beside them
• Health workers who deliver care under challenging conditions
• Communities committed to ending stigma and misinformation
DR TB is not a life sentence. With the right support, treatment, and awareness, healing is possible, and every voice matters in this fight.
Let’s use World TB Day as a reminder that ending TB starts with us, through knowledge, solidarity, and action.
