On April 15, 2026, we gathered at American Corner Gweru for an inspiring discussion on how Artificial Intelligence and digital tools can revolutionize waste management in Zimbabwe.
Key Highlights:
Zimbabwe’s Waste Crisis: We unpacked the reality - over 2,500 tones of waste generated daily, with less than 40% properly collected.
AI Solutions in Action: Demonstrations of smart bins, AI‑driven truck routing, and computer vision sorting showed how technology can cut costs, reduce pollution, and improve efficiency.
Local Case Studies: Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, and Chitungwiza were spotlighted, with AI opportunities ranging from predictive maintenance of trucks to smart bin hubs in high‑density suburbs.
Community Interventions: We shared successes from Dombojena, Mkoba, Ascot, and other Gweru suburbs where we are implementing plastic recycling, pelletizing, and household waste management initiatives that empower communities.
Global Benchmarks: Lessons from Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, and Sweden illustrated how AI can create jobs, formalize informal waste work, and protect public health.
Policy Recommendations: A call for a National AI Waste Strategy, investment in local skills, and protection of informal workers to ensure inclusive, sustainable adoption. We encourage, the government, local city councils, tech enthusiasts, students, environmental advocates, and professionals to come together to learn, network, and envision smarter, cleaner cities.
Harnessing AI in waste management creates efficiency thus improving health, livelihoods, and dignity of waste pickers. Cleaner environments reduce cholera and typhoid outbreaks, recycling creates income opportunities, and smart systems empower councils with real‑time data.
Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this national conversation. Together, we are building momentum for Zimbabwe to lead Africa’s AI waste revolution.
