Iโm Rosemary Chigariro, and my journey in mine action began in 2013, shortly after the birth of my first child. From the beginning, I was determined to build a better future for my family while developing professionally in a demanding and important field.
After taking a break in 2018, I returned to mine action in 2020 as a Deminer. Through commitment, hard work and continuous learning, I progressed to become a Team Leader in 2022, supervising a team of ten deminers. Along the way, I also completed Quality Management training and completed Explosive Ordnance Disposal Level 2 qualification.
My professional journey has also helped me achieve important personal milestones, including obtaining my driving licence and buying my own car. At home, I invested in several small income-generating activities, including animal husbandry, gas filling and soap making. One of my proudest achievements was drilling a water borehole, providing my children, household and garden with reliable access to clean and safe water and bringing a meaningful improvement to everyday life.
My journey has not always been easy. Working for extended periods in the field and taking on greater leadership responsibilities sometimes meant facing resistance, differing expectations and challenging situations. When I was promoted to Quality Management and Training Officer in November 2024, I entered a role requiring confidence, professionalism and the ability to make difficult decisions.
I remained focused on doing my job well, applying the procedures consistently and fairly, and treating everyone with the same professional standards. I also valued the support of my colleagues, and the encouragement and strength I received from my family.
Today, I see my journey as proof of what determination, opportunity and continuous learning can achieve. From Deminer to Team Leader and now Quality Management and Training Officer, every step has strengthened my commitment to supporting others, sharing knowledge and contributing to safer communities.
