Esther Teedzai: Building a Future Through Safe Land, Purpose, and Education.

My name is Esther Teedzaai, from 2014 to today, mine action has been my calling not just my job. I started as a Deminer, grew into Team Leader, and now serve as an Assistant Site Supervisor. NPA helped me build more than skills; it helped me build a future supporting my family, educating my children, caring for my mother with dignity, and moving me closer to my university degree.

If you take anything from my story, let it be this: with determination, continuous learning, and the right support, growth is possible inside and outside the workplace.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞-𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!!!

After completing the Explosive Ordnance Risk Education Training of Trainers (EORE TOT) programme, community members in Mudzi and Nyanga safely identified and reported a landmine, an 81mm mortar bomb and a few live bullets.

Their swift action triggered an immediate response, and all explosive items were safely destroyed within 24 hours by NPA, the Zimbabwe Mine Action Centre (ZIMAC) and local authorities.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀.

𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 (𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 – 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔).

In Mudzi District, NPA Zimbabwe Deminers worked through every 21-day cycle, clearing minefields with courage and care. From January to June 2026, they cleared 𝟒𝟑𝟖,𝟏𝟐𝟑 𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 and destroyed 𝟏𝟕𝟐 𝐌𝟗𝟔𝟗 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, creating safe ground for families to move, farm, and live without fear. While their families waited back home, the deminers stayed focused, protecting lives and limbs, one cleared stretch at a time. With support from the Auswärtiges Amt (Germany Federal Foreign Office - GFFO) and Norad (Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation), this work is helping pave the way toward a safer, landmine-free future for all.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleagues in Ukraine. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives, as well as to those who were injured in this devastating attack. We stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult time.

Our thoughts today are with our colleagues in Ukraine and their families.

We have received reports that two of our staff member have been killed and several others injured in a reported Russian attack. We are working to verify the details while prioritising support for those injured and our employees in the country.

“This is devastating news. My thoughts are with the families, loved ones and colleagues of those affected,” said Secretary General Raymond Johansen.

“Our immediate priority is to support the injured and provide assistance to our colleagues in Ukraine,” Johansen added.

Despite starting with varying levels of knowledge, participants demonstrated outstanding progress, achieving final scores of up to 95% and 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, while this impact is further magnified by the remarkable 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟬 𝗘𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿, who have since 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 that have significantly 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧, 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨.

In alignment with our 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (together with our donors GFFO and Norad) 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴‑𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 following the completion of landmine clearance and land‑release operations in Zimbabwe, NPA held a Leadership and Management Training facilitated by Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) on the 30th-31st of March. The training was designed to 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳. The two day programme focused on 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲𝘀.

Participants engaged in reflective, interactive exercises that encouraged them to examine how their backgrounds, emotions, and behaviours shape their interactions and management approaches. The training also used the Four Humours personality model (Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic, and Phlegmatic) to explore how different temperaments influence behaviour, communication preferences, decision making, and leadership approaches.

Through presentations and group discussions, staff also 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The training created a supportive, therapeutic and engaging environment that allowed participants to openly reflect, gain new insights, and build practical skills to improve both personal leadership effectiveness and overall organisational performance.
