Nyasha the Elephant update! ๐Ÿ˜

We recently sighted Nyasha and her herd right by our research centre. Her herd consisted of 4 adult females, 2 subadult females and 4 yearly calves. Unfortunately we didn't manage to get any photos of them at this time due to the thick bush, so this image is one of her from a different sighting.

Nyashas herd is of the first herds to return to the north of Chizarira. Most of the collared herds that ALERT is monitoring had moved to a woodland area consisting of acacias (Faidherbia albida) near the Chirisa/Chizarira boundary. It is nice to see them back around our research centre! ๐Ÿ˜

And thank you to all that donated to the LittlexLittle campaign with GlobalGiving! We appreciate your continued support!

For the next few days, GlobalGiving is matching all donations up to $50 per unique donor, by 50%! That means, if you donate $50, they will match with $25 = $75, that's enough lights to protect an entire homesteads livelyhood!

Collared lioness Choolwe (meaning luck๐Ÿ€) has occupied a new territory in Chizarira National Park. This is along a river which has โ€œJesse bushโ€ thickets where she hides and has an active den with cubs.

In her new territory, conflict has arisen with the local communities as they sometimes herd cattle into the national park. This has caused Choolwe to become a regular cattle feeder, due to the easy and accessible prey. We believe that she is following the cattle bells.

According to a study carried out in 2020, it was established that cattle bells trigger an easy dinner response for lions and this increases the incidences of livestock predation.

ALERT in patnership with ZIMPARKS has since engaged the local chief to liaise with the community to try to deter them from herding their cattle inside the national park.

Did you know that ALERT, with its 7 collared elephants, is the only organisation that is contributing with vital research on elephant in the Chizarira area, contributing to the larger conservation efforts of KAZA? ๐ŸŒ

Chizarira is an integral part of one of the Worldโ€™s largest wildlife protection zones, the Kavango-Zambezi Trans frontier Conservation Area (KAZA). A vitally important transboundary wildlife corridor including five countries - Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. This area, of which Chizarira is a valuable part, is home to over half of Africaโ€™s remaining elephants.

ALERT is proud to be contributing with this data, and we would be very grateful if you could donate to help us collar more elephants, so that we can expand this research even more! ๐Ÿ˜

Our Victoria Falls team just got back from visiting Isaac in Chizarira National Park! Isaac took us tracking Asli the lion, and taught us all about using the research equipment.

We only managed to see a glimpse one of the collared elephants, due to the tall grass and dense vegetation, but we still had a great time getting an insight into Isaac's day-to-day life, and how the wildlife in the park is doing.

Isaac, our researcher based in Chizarira National Park, tracking collared lioness named Asli - Wild at Life.

Collaring allows researchers to track lion movements and behaviour, gather data on population dynamics, and monitor the health of individual lions. This information is invaluable for conservation efforts and can help us better understand how to protect lions. The collars also allow researchers to remotely gather data, making the process more efficient.

The data gathered through collaring can help inform decision-making around issues like habitat management and human-wildlife conflict. By understanding lion behaviour and population trends, we can work towards creating a more sustainable future for these amazing animals.

So next time you hear about lion collaring, remember that it's an important tool for wildlife research and conservation!

Waterbuck is one of the few species at Chizarira National Park of which there is an abundance. Due to the animals' oily fur and the oily consistency of the meat the species is not a target of poachers compared to other Antelopes.
Over the years Lions have adapted and due to the abundance of waterbuck in the park have learned that this is an easier source of food. Nonetheless, Lions will still regularly leave the park boundaries in order to find easier prey such as cattle.

We would like you to consider donating to our Human-Wildlife Conflict project in order to support the communities and help protect wildlife.

Adorable Baby Elephant! ๐Ÿ˜

Our team had the please of sighting this adorable Elephant heard recently at Chizarira National Park. It was a larger heard with numerous little calfs. While already quite steady on their feet the little ones still have to learn control of their trunks!

A calf will weigh just below 100 kilo when born and is roughly 1 meter tall. As their eye sight is not great when born they recognise their mothers by touch, scent and sound.

Please consider donating to our cause to continue studying and supporting this wonderful creatures.
