💬 Tuesday Talk

Talking about our feelings can improve emotional well-being and reduce feelings of isolation. When women are encouraged to share, they often realise they are not alone in their experiences.

Yet many women carry stress, worries, and challenges on their own, unsure of who to turn to or hesitant to open up.

As a woman, who do you talk to when you're struggling?

Do you have someone you can trust with your thoughts, feelings, and experiences?

Let’s talk 👇

We’ve been quiet on here for a bit, but behind the scenes at the Girls and Women Empowerment Network - GWEN the sewing machines have been humming and real transformation is happening!

Today, we want you to meet Yvonne an incredible young woman from Seke Ward 7. She is one of our dedicated trainees in the P.O.W.E.R Project (People and Organizations Working for Equality and Rights) supported by Diakonia Diakonia.

👇 Watch the video below to see her incredible journey! 👇
"I didn't even know how to thread a sewing machine when I first started..."

In this video, Yvonne takes us through her amazing progress. From mastering the very basics of handling a machine, she and her peers have already successfully designed and stitched beautiful bonnets and wrappers (aprons)

When you equip a young woman with a skill, you change the trajectory of an entire community.

Join us in celebrating Yvonne and the entire cohort's hard work in the comments! 👇🎨

Periods are natural, but period poverty is a barrier that too many girls still face.

This Menstrual Hygiene Day, we are calling on our community to help create a period-friendly world by donating sanitary pads to girls and women in vulnerable communities.

A pad donation is more than just a product — it is dignity, confidence, health and the chance for a girl to stay in school without interruption.

Together, we can break the stigma and ensure no girl is held back because of her period.

Today, on Menstrual Hygiene Day, we join the global call to build a world where every girl and woman can manage her period with dignity, confidence and pride. 🌸💜

This year’s theme, “Together for a Period Friendly World,” reminds us that menstrual health is not just a women’s issue — it is a community issue, a human rights issue, and a development issue.

Too many girls still miss school, face stigma, or lack access to safe menstrual products and information. Together, we can change that by creating supportive spaces where girls and women are empowered to thrive without shame or limitations.

Let’s continue breaking the stigma, promoting menstrual health education, and ensuring access for all.

Wise Up Wednesday

Many young women silently struggle with stress, anxiety, and emotional pressure every day, yet their challenges are often ignored or dismissed.

Too often, girls and young women carry these burdens in silence because they fear judgment, misunderstanding, or not being taken seriously. These barriers are real and can impact confidence, relationships, academic performance, and overall well-being.

True support means creating spaces where young women feel safe to speak openly, where their emotions are treated with care, and where their experiences are heard without bias. It means building communities that respond to their realities, rather than dismissing them.

When a young woman feels supported and understood, she is empowered to care for her mental wellbeing, build confidence, and navigate life with strength.

What can we do?
- Promote safe and supportive spaces
- Encourage open conversations about mental health
- Challenge stigma and judgment

Because support is not just about being present; it’s about safety, understanding, and respect.

GWEN had the privilege of attending the World AIDS Day commemorations at Dunnotar School on 22 May, facilitated by the National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe.

The event brought together young people, families, community members and organisations, including Youth Advocates, the Zimbabwe Republic Police - ZRP Victim Friendly Unit, Population Solutions for Health, and many others committed to promoting health, awareness and safe spaces within our communities.

Through interactive engagements and youth-friendly services, community members accessed SRHR information, HIV awareness and testing services, counselling, GBV support information, and referrals to essential health services.

Moments like these remind us of the importance of community-led conversations in breaking stigma, encouraging access to services, and empowering young people with knowledge that protects and transforms lives. 💙

✨ One of the highlights at the World Café was watching young women dive into an SRHR-themed game of Snakes and Ladders, where every move on the board sparked meaningful conversations and learning moments!

From discussions around menstrual health and HIV prevention to consent and sexual reproductive health rights, the game transformed SRHR education into a fun, interactive and engaging experience. 💜

Using play as a vehicle for learning allowed young women to openly participate, ask questions, share ideas and build knowledge in a safe and relaxed environment. It was more than just a game — it was a creative way of empowering young women with information that supports healthier choices and brighter futures.
