Sprout Women Empowerment Trust is participating in the regional project review for the Feminist Alternatives on Climate and Environment (FACE) Programme in South Africa.
Through the Healing Homes: Transforming Gender Relations and Preventing GBV initiative, we center the role of women as key drivers of household stability and community development, particularly within the context of climate change and resilience building. While women’s economic participation strengthens adaptive capacity and supports sustainable livelihoods, it can also disrupt entrenched power relations within households.
In many contexts, financial independence challenges patriarchal norms, often resulting in resistance, tension, and, in some cases, increased risk of gender-based violence. These dynamics directly affect the effectiveness of climate resilience efforts, as unequal power relations can limit women’s decision-making, access to resources, and participation in community-led climate action.
Addressing climate change therefore requires a deliberate focus on transforming gender relations at household and community levels—ensuring that women’s empowerment does not occur in isolation, but is supported by shifts in norms, shared decision-making, and inclusive approaches that strengthen both resilience and social cohesion.
We are excited to contribute our actions and perspectives to this collective effort. The three-day programme provides an enriching space to engage critically, share knowledge, and learn from diverse experiences. We look forward to adding our voice and engaging thoughtfully as we reflect, exchange, and strengthen our approaches alongside others.
