Environmental justice is gender justice. This World Environment Day, we celebrate the women and girls leading climate action, protecting natural resources, and building resilient communities. A just transition must leave no one behind.

Sprout Women Empowerment Trust is participating in the regional project review for the Feminist Alternatives on Climate and Environment (FACE) Programme in South Africa.
Through the Healing Homes: Transforming Gender Relations and Preventing GBV initiative, we center the role of women as key drivers of household stability and community development, particularly within the context of climate change and resilience building. While women’s economic participation strengthens adaptive capacity and supports sustainable livelihoods, it can also disrupt entrenched power relations within households.
In many contexts, financial independence challenges patriarchal norms, often resulting in resistance, tension, and, in some cases, increased risk of gender-based violence. These dynamics directly affect the effectiveness of climate resilience efforts, as unequal power relations can limit women’s decision-making, access to resources, and participation in community-led climate action.
Addressing climate change therefore requires a deliberate focus on transforming gender relations at household and community levels—ensuring that women’s empowerment does not occur in isolation, but is supported by shifts in norms, shared decision-making, and inclusive approaches that strengthen both resilience and social cohesion.
We are excited to contribute our actions and perspectives to this collective effort. The three-day programme provides an enriching space to engage critically, share knowledge, and learn from diverse experiences. We look forward to adding our voice and engaging thoughtfully as we reflect, exchange, and strengthen our approaches alongside others.

Our communities are co-ceating "The Households We Want" to promote non-violence, dignity, and equality within families and communities.
In partnership with Old Mutual Zimbabwe, we had conversations around financial management at household and business level to promote good money habits and reduce violence that arises as a result of women's economic empowerment.

A safe home is not built by walls. It is built by respect, shared responsibility, love, and accountability.
Through the co-creation of “The Households We Want” and the Safe Household Charter, communities are coming together to reimagine homes where women and girls are protected, valued, heard, and free from violence.
What are you committing to do?

At the SWET Hub in Mash Central, change is not loud—but it is deeply felt.

Women gather in our Skills and Conversation Café, bringing their stories, their struggles, and their hopes. In that circle, they find more than knowledge—they find each other. They learn, they speak, they listen, and slowly, confidence begins to take root.

Through their ISALS (Mikando), small contributions grow into something meaningful—children stay in school, businesses begin, homes become more stable. What starts as a conversation becomes action, and what begins with one woman begins to touch many.

This is why we celebrate this space.
This is why SWET exists: to hold safe spaces where women can learn, lead, and grow.

And it is why we can never stop—
improving one household at a time,
one woman at a time,
until all our communities are transformed.

Happening Now | Kuwadzana
The Just Transition Innovation Hub is currently taking place in schools in Kuwadzana. Positioning these hubs within schools is critical, as it integrates climate and environmental learning into spaces where young people are already engaged, supports early awareness, and strengthens the role of schools as centres for community knowledge and action.
Innovation hubs play an important role in strengthening community capacity to respond to environmental and climate challenges. By locating these platforms within local areas, they support practical knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and the development of context-specific solutions.
This hub has been implemented in collaboration with stakeholders working in the environmental and climate action sector. The initiative aligns with the mandate of SWET, which focuses on environmental sustainability and the empowerment of women and girls to participate in and lead community-level responses.
Embedding such initiatives within schools and communities contributes to more inclusive and effective approaches to climate action.
