One of Africa’s most endangered predators, the African wild dog — also known as the painted dog — continues to find refuge in the Savé Valley Conservancy. 🐾

Known for their striking coats of black, brown, white, and gold, these highly social animals live and hunt in packs that can reach up to 30. Across the conservancy’s woodlands and open grasslands, cooperation is what keeps the pack alive.

Conservation efforts within the conservancy — including anti-poaching patrols and habitat management — are crucial for the long-term survival of African wild dogs. These efforts help protect the species from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and disease transmission from domesticated dogs.

On Endangered Species Day, every effort to protect them matters. 🌍

A lioness teaches strength without saying a word. Protective, patient, fierce, and endlessly loving — motherhood in the wild is powerful beyond measure.

This Mother’s Day, we honour the queens shaping the future of the wild, and the mothers whose love shapes generations beyond it.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Six-year-old Terrence Mundunge is fortunate to have escaped a buffalo encounter in an area adjacent to Savé Valley Conservancy with only minor injuries.

While the incident could have had a far more serious outcome, the brief timeframe of the encounter may have worked in his favour, with the animal knocking him aside rather than causing further harm.

We commend the swift action of our community rangers, who immediately raised the alarm, as well as the National Parks and Wildlife Management team and Savé Valley Conservancy response teams, who attended to the situation with professionalism and care.

This incident underscores the importance of well-established safety protocols and the critical role of community awareness in areas where people and wildlife coexist.

As human populations continue to expand around the Conservancy, so too does the risk of human-wildlife conflict (HWC). Ensuring the long-term safety of both our communities and wildlife will require sustainable solutions, including the reinstallation of perimeter fencing around the Conservancy.

At Savé Valley Conservancy, we remain committed to strengthening conservation efforts that protect both people and wildlife, while working towards a more balanced and secure coexistence.

She roars… and the still water carries it.

Lion roars can travel up to 8 km, especially at night when cooler air allows sound to travel further.
