The past week was an important moment of strengthening disaster preparedness and community resilience in Matobo HOCIC Zimbabwe, under the Matobo ICSP/BRIC-Zim project, conducted Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) structures monitoring in Wards 10, 11 and 20.
The activity brought together Ward and Village DRR Committee members, community representatives, local leadership and key government departments to assess the functionality of local DRR structures, review community preparedness systems and strengthen reporting and response mechanisms.
Through participatory dialogue, communities identified priority hazards and disaster risks affecting lives, livelihoods and household safety. These included crop-related risks, flash floods, damaged infrastructure, unsafe shelters, lightning-related incidents and unsafe wells and pits. The discussions created an opportunity to strengthen risk awareness, improve local coordination, update village and ward disaster preparedness plans, enhance early warning communication and improve documentation and referral pathways.
HOCIC, with Matobo DRR Committees and local stakeholders, visited a vulnerable household in Ward 20 that had been affected by lightning during last year’s heavy storms. The team provided groceries and basic needs to help cushion the family while longer-term referral and support mechanisms are being pursued to strengthen household resilience and reduce further protection and safety risks.
This work reflects HOCIC’s commitment to complementing government and community efforts in reducing disaster risks, strengthening local preparedness and building safer, inclusive and resilient communities. It also reinforces the importance of ensuring that women, children, elderly persons, youth and persons with disabilities are meaningfully included in disaster risk reduction, preparedness and response processes.
HOCIC appreciates the support of Irish Aid through Oxfam in Zimbabwe and the collaboration of local leadership, the Department of Social Development, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Ministry of Youth, Ward DRR Committees and Village DRR Committee representatives.
Together, we continue strengthening local systems for disaster preparedness, protection, response and resilience.
