We commend the Ministry of Health and Child Care's NCD Programme on reaching this significant milestone. It is a privilege to contribute to this process as a representative of the Zimbabwe NCD Alliance and communities affected by Childhood Cardiovascular diseases.
The voices and lived experiences of people living with NCDs are not optional additions to this strategy—they are essential to its relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability. We therefore look forward to sustained engagement and the formal institutionalization of lived-experience representation within all levels of NCD policy development, implementation, monitoring, and decision-making.

SIUT Contributes to World Heart Federation Report, Urging Global Action on Congenital Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease remains the world’s biggest killer, yet Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)—the most common global birth defect—is still tragically overlooked in low- and middle-incomCardiovascular disease remains the world’s biggest killer, yet Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)—the most common global birth defect—is still tragically overlooked in low- and middle-incom countries (LMICs).

At the World Heart Summit in Geneva, the World Heart Federation launched a groundbreaking report on CHD. It is a matter of immense pride for SIUT that Dr. Babar Hasan, from our Division of Cardiothoracic Sciences, contributed as one of the authors of this critical global document.

The report delivers a stark reminder: the science is clear, but equitable action is missing.

The Stark Reality of CHD:
- 90% of children with CHD are born in LMICs.
- Delayed diagnosis, lack of access, and fragile healthcare systems mean thousands of children die needlessly.
- Future of a child with heart disease should not be determined by imaginary lines on the globe

Declarations do not save lives. Decisions do. To end this preventable neglect, we urgently need to build resilient congenital cardiac care systems focused on early detection, sustainable financing, workforce training, and universal access to imaging and surgery.

CHD is common. Access to care is not. It’s time to change that.

Thank you to the World Heart Summit for bringing the urgency of the global heart health plight to light through the World Heart Report 2026.
We truly appreciated the inclusion of our lived experiences, especially those from LMIC countries like Zimbabwe.
We are also incredibly proud of all the speakers from the Global ARCH family who were mentored and empowered to confidently share their journeys in such an important global report. It clearly demonstrates why patient lived experience must be placed at the centre of solution-making — as stakeholders, not just beneficiaries.
Our hearts are indeed grateful to World Heart for both the event and the report — truly a milestone moment.
As Brave Little Hearts, it is an honour to be part of the Global Alliance for Rheumatic and Congenital Hearts, a driving force behind patient-led organisations, alongside the NCD Alliance, helping bring patients to the discussion table as stakeholders, not just beneficiaries.
