Today is World Heart Day.

For most people, that means a graphic about diet and exercise. Walk more. Eat better. Protect your heart.

For us, it means something different.

Our kids didn't get heart defects from lifestyle. They were born this way hearts that formed differently before they ever took a breath. No amount of walking or eating right could have prevented it. There was nothing anyone did wrong.

1 in 100 babies are born with a congenital heart defect. Most people will scroll past a World Heart Day post today without knowing that number exists. Without knowing there are families who've spent birthdays in hospital hallways instead of at home. Without knowing what it's like to learn to read a monitor before you ever expected to.

So today, we're not talking about steps and cholesterol.

We're talking about the babies who needed a surgeon before they needed a stroller. The parents who became fluent in a language of medicine nobody chooses to learn. The kids living full, loud, normal lives with a heart that had to be rebuilt to get them there.

World Heart Day isn't just about the hearts that can be protected with better habits.

It's also about the ones that had to be fixed before they ever had a chance to beat the way they were supposed to.

Happy World Heart Day to every heart warrior out there the ones whose hearts didn't start out working the way they should have, and fought anyway. 💙

We commend the Ministry of Health and Child Care's NCD Programme on reaching this significant milestone. It is a privilege to contribute to this process as a representative of the Zimbabwe NCD Alliance and communities affected by Childhood Cardiovascular diseases.
The voices and lived experiences of people living with NCDs are not optional additions to this strategy—they are essential to its relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability. We therefore look forward to sustained engagement and the formal institutionalization of lived-experience representation within all levels of NCD policy development, implementation, monitoring, and decision-making.

SIUT Contributes to World Heart Federation Report, Urging Global Action on Congenital Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease remains the world’s biggest killer, yet Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)—the most common global birth defect—is still tragically overlooked in low- and middle-incomCardiovascular disease remains the world’s biggest killer, yet Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)—the most common global birth defect—is still tragically overlooked in low- and middle-incom countries (LMICs).

At the World Heart Summit in Geneva, the World Heart Federation launched a groundbreaking report on CHD. It is a matter of immense pride for SIUT that Dr. Babar Hasan, from our Division of Cardiothoracic Sciences, contributed as one of the authors of this critical global document.

The report delivers a stark reminder: the science is clear, but equitable action is missing.

The Stark Reality of CHD:
- 90% of children with CHD are born in LMICs.
- Delayed diagnosis, lack of access, and fragile healthcare systems mean thousands of children die needlessly.
- Future of a child with heart disease should not be determined by imaginary lines on the globe

Declarations do not save lives. Decisions do. To end this preventable neglect, we urgently need to build resilient congenital cardiac care systems focused on early detection, sustainable financing, workforce training, and universal access to imaging and surgery.

CHD is common. Access to care is not. It’s time to change that.

Thank you to the World Heart Summit for bringing the urgency of the global heart health plight to light through the World Heart Report 2026.
We truly appreciated the inclusion of our lived experiences, especially those from LMIC countries like Zimbabwe.
We are also incredibly proud of all the speakers from the Global ARCH family who were mentored and empowered to confidently share their journeys in such an important global report. It clearly demonstrates why patient lived experience must be placed at the centre of solution-making — as stakeholders, not just beneficiaries.
Our hearts are indeed grateful to World Heart for both the event and the report — truly a milestone moment.
As Brave Little Hearts, it is an honour to be part of the Global Alliance for Rheumatic and Congenital Hearts, a driving force behind patient-led organisations, alongside the NCD Alliance, helping bring patients to the discussion table as stakeholders, not just beneficiaries.
