Tshayile Spring: Indigenous Knowledge in Wetland Conservation

As part of consultations for the Bubi District Environmental Wetland Management Plan, Habakkuk Trust, together with Bubi Rural District Council, Environmental Management Agency, AGRITEX, Forestry Commision, Mbembesi Sub-catchment Council and the Ministry of Local Government, engaged communities at Tshayile Spring to gather views on wetland management.

The discussions showed how community voices, cultural values and indigenous knowledge are key to practical, locally relevant wetland protection and sustainable use.

Communities shared traditional practices that have protected the spring for generations, including cultural restrictions on using black pots and cans for fetching water, reflecting deep respect for this shared resource.

🌱 Wetland conservation is not only about ecosystems—it is also about preserving community knowledge, values and practices.

Habakkuk Trust, in a joint partnership with Bubi Rural District Council and the Environmental Management Agency has developed the Bubi District Environmental Wetland Management Plan.
The Plan provides an evidence-based framework for the protection, restoration and sustainable management of Bubi’s wetlands, recognising their vital role in supporting livelihoods, biodiversity, water resources and climate resilience.

Through this collaborative effort, we are strengthening local environmental governance and supporting communities and local authorities to safeguard these critical ecosystems for present and future generations.

📍 Strengthening Inclusive Local Governance in Bubi District

Habakkuk Trust is implementing a pilot Local Governance Project in Bubi District.

During the inception phase, our team engaged key stakeholders, including the Office of the District Development Coordinator, Bubi Rural District Council and Traditional Leadership, to introduce the project and strengthen collaboration for its successful implementation.

Supported by the Embassy of Switzerland to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe Zambia and Zimbabwe in partnersship with the Zimbabwe Institute, the project seeks to strengthen citizen self-agency and participation of women, youth and PWDs while improving the responsiveness of local level duty bearers.

For many women in Bubi District, harvesting broom grass is more than a tradition—it's a vital source of household income and an important contributor to local economic development.

However, these women face growing challenges. They often harvest in areas with a high presence of illegal artisanal mining activities, exposing them to safety risks and increasing competition over natural resources. They also face pressure from harvesters coming from outside the district, leading to conflicts.

As Africa commemorates Africa Day under the theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems,” Habakkuk Trust reiterates that access to clean water and dignified sanitation is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for sustainable development.
Women and girls across communities continue to bear the greatest burden of water insecurity and poor sanitation, making inclusive water governance and meaningful citizen participation critical in shaping responsive and accountable service delivery systems.

An Africa that guarantees safe water and sanitation for all is an Africa that is healthier, more equal and more resilient.
