One thing that kept recurring at the Zambezi Meetup conversations was the issue of human–wildlife conflict. On our first night in Victoria Falls, an elephant trampled a man which was a painful reminder that this is not an abstract debate, but a lived and urgent reality for communities on both sides of the Zambezi.

There was an honest acknowledgment in our discussions: as humans, we have expanded cities and settlements into spaces that were once wildlife corridors and habitats. Yet the challenge before us is how to shift the narrative from conflict to coexistence. What would it look like to design cities, policies, and tourism models that respect both human safety and ecological balance?

Our visit to Mukuni Village in Livingstone showed us what is at stake. The area is home to the iconic Big Five, and the presence of wildlife is not just an ecological fact, it is an economic lifeline through tourism. Sustainable coexistence ensures that communities continue to benefit from these natural endowments while minimizing tragic encounters.

If the Zambezi region is to thrive, the conversation must move beyond blame and toward collaborative solutions, community awareness, better land-use planning, conservation partnerships, and cross-border dialogue. Only then can we protect both human life and the wildlife that sustains the region’s cultural and economic vitality.

Under the Zambezi Meet-Up, we also gave ourselves permission to play. At Victoria Falls Skating Rink, we learned how to skate (some of us gracefully, some of us courageously), swung high, and took on a full obstacle course. Play is culture too. It’s built into us as children, but it doesn’t expire when we grow up. As adults, reconnecting with our inner child is a powerful act of healing, joy, and freedom. There was something beautiful about learning alongside the current generation of skaters; watching the confidence, rhythm, and community they are building, and realizing that these are the cultures they will carry forward as they grow. A reminder that culture is not only in museums and history books, it’s also in movement, laughter, scraped knees, and the courage to try again.

As Maya Angelou reminds us, “When you invite someone to sit at your table and you want to cook for them, you're inviting a person into your life." Food was an important part of the Zambezi Meet-Up not just as nourishment, but as a way of tracing how culture along the Zambezi has evolved and continues to shape who we are. It was a pleasure indulging in multigrain mealie meal at Victoria Falls Tshisanyama, and savoring fried fish in the vibrant corners of Livingstone. Each bite carried history; a blending of traditions, trade routes, local ingredients, and modern twists that reflect how taste itself evolves over time.

Beyond the flavours, the meals were showered with conversation. Around the table we explored social practices from proposing marriage in public, to taboo topics like cannibalism unpacking how communities negotiate culture, belief, and change. Food created the safety and softness for those conversations to unfold.

Most importantly, we had a blast preparing meals for one another during the residency. In chopping, stirring, tasting, and laughing together, we were reminded that taste is part of our everyday lives. It is memory. It is identity. It is culture served warm and shared generously.
