World Water Day – 22 March

Protect Water, Protect Wildlife

Water is the lifeblood of our planet. Every river, wetland, spring, and waterhole supports a delicate web of life that sustains wildlife, ecosystems, and human communities alike.

In Zimbabwe and across Africa, wildlife depends on reliable water sources to survive. From elephants and antelope to birds, frogs, fish, and insects, countless species rely on healthy rivers, wetlands, and natural waterholes for drinking, breeding, and feeding. These ecosystems also support vegetation, regulate climate, and maintain biodiversity.

However, clean water is under increasing pressure. Pollution, habitat destruction, unsustainable water use, and climate change are affecting rivers and wetlands around the world. Changing rainfall patterns, droughts, and rising temperatures are placing additional stress on already fragile ecosystems.

Protecting our water resources is essential for the survival of wildlife and the health of our environment. Each of us can play a role by reducing pollution, protecting wetlands and riverbanks, conserving water, and supporting conservation initiatives that safeguard our natural ecosystems.

When we protect water, we protect life.

On World Water Day, Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe Matabeleland encourages everyone to reflect on the importance of water and take positive action to ensure a sustainable future for wildlife, nature, and people.

Together we can ensure that clean water continues to support wildlife, ecosystems, and communities for generations to come.

International Day of Action for Rivers: March 14th

The International Day of Action for Rivers is observed annually on March 14th to highlight the vital role rivers play in sustaining life, supporting ecosystems, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of billions of people.
This day serves as a reminder of the importance of rivers in our lives and the urgent need to protect them from pollution and other threats. It encourages communities to unite in solidarity with rivers and the communities that protect and defend them.
The theme for this year's observance is "Our Rivers, Our Future," emphasizing the need to protect free-flowing rivers, safeguard water rights, and ensure local voices are heard in river management. The day is a call to action for individuals and communities to participate in clean-up drives, support conservation efforts, and advocate for policies that safeguard these vital water sources for the future.
