This week, we attended an Advocacy Leadership Training hosted by Zizo Motion Pictures under the Safe and Inclusive Cities Project. The objective of the meeting was to equip young leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to meaningfully influence policies and decisions that affect their communities, building on priorities outlined in Zimbabwe’s National Youth Empowerment Strategy and the National Development Strategy II (NDS II).

A key lesson from the session was the Advocacy Tree Model, a tool used to analyze issues. In this framework:
• Roots represent the underlying causes of a problem
• The trunk represents the core issue itself
• Branches represent the visible effects or consequences

This model helps advocates move beyond addressing symptoms and instead focus on tackling the root causes of challenges, leading to more sustainable and impactful solutions.

The training also explored the importance of packaging advocacy into a strong policy brief when engaging decision makers. This requires:
• Using credible evidence and data to support the issue being raised
• Highlighting best practices or proven solutions
• Clearly outlining the policy ask and how it will benefit communities
• Defining the expected outcomes of the proposed intervention

Equipping young leaders with these skills is essential in strengthening youth participation in governance and development processes, ensuring that young people are not only beneficiaries but active drivers of change in their communities.

Youth led initiatives are powerful tools for empowering young people and strengthening communities. When young people are given opportunities to lead, they gain confidence, build life skills and become active agents of change. By taking leadership roles in community programmes, advocacy efforts and development initiatives, young people are able to identify challenges affecting their communities and contribute innovative solutions.

: This Women’s Month we reflect on an HCC meeting in Nkulumane Clinic, we co-convened. During the meeting, Sister-in-Charge K. Mpofu raised a critical issue which is the absence of a youth-friendly corner at her clinic.

By highlighting this gap, she emphasized the importance of creating safe, structured spaces for young people within community health systems.

For us, this was more than a moment of leadership, it reminded us that inclusive health governance requires voices that recognise and prioritise young people’s needs.

As we celebrate Women’s Month, we honour women who strengthen systems, advocate for youth inclusion and drive practical change within community health structures.

The strategy focuses on entrepreneurship, digital skills development and employment opportunities while addressing key challenges such as drug and substance abuse, poverty and limited access to finance.

This strategy creates opportunities for young people to collaborate with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, development partners and civil society organizations to drive sustainable development.

Young people are the architects of change. Stay informed and explore the opportunities presented by the National Youth Empowerment Strategy.

At Lunia Centre for Youths, we value youth-led actions that improve and advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Today we are reflecting on the work of our SPARK Champions in Tsholotsho.

Since last year, 12 young leaders from Ward 6 (Jimila), Ward 11 (Tsholotsho Centre) and Ward 14 (Makhaza) have been conducting sessions, engaging their peers on SRHR and supporting young people in their wards to navigate the challenges they face.

Through their dedication, they have not only educated but also empowered young people to make informed decisions, speak up and support one another. Our motto, “Empowering the Future,” is truly exemplified through their work, demonstrating the impact of youth-led action in strengthening communities.
