Greenhut celebrated World Environment Day in style with the awards ceremony for the Biodiversity Essay Competition held at Masiyephambili College. The event brought together students from different schools to recognize and celebrate their commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable food systems.

Congratulations to our outstanding winners:
🥇 Thandeka Ncube (Masiyephambili College) – First Place
🥈 Tamudaishe Munamati (Gifford High School) – Second Place
🥉 Collin Colleta Moyo (Premier High School) – Third Place

The winners received trophies and indigenous fruit hampers, while the winning school was awarded 50 indigenous fruit trees. The other participating schools each received 10 trees to support their greening efforts and sustainable food systems.

The celebrations concluded with a tree-planting ceremony, symbolizing a shared commitment to biodiversity conservation and a greener future.

It is truly inspiring to see young people demonstrating such enthusiasm for environmental issues and urban food systems. Their passion, creativity, and commitment are a reminder that a sustainable future is not merely an aspiration, it is achievable through the actions of today’s youth.

🌱 This week, we participated in the validation workshop for the Zimbabwe Youth in Agrifood Systems Investment Plan (2026–2030), coordinated by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Zimbabwe Country office and the Government of Zimbabwe.

The workshop brought together young agripreneurs, policymakers, development partners, financial institutions, and youth-serving organizations to shape a national roadmap that places young people at the centre of agrifood systems transformation. Discussions focused on addressing long-standing barriers faced by youth, including limited access to land, finance, technology, skills development, and markets, while creating pathways for meaningful participation across agricultural value chains.

For us, the conversations strongly resonated with the work we are already implementing through the Project where we are empowering young people to become active participants in building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems. Through school food forests, agroecology clubs, youth-led urban agriculture initiatives, biodiversity conservation activities, and entrepreneurship training, we have seen first-hand how young people can drive innovation and transform their communities when given the right opportunities and support.

We were particularly encouraged by the emphasis on climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness development, value addition, digital innovation, and youth-led enterprises—areas that are critical for creating green jobs and building resilience in the face of climate change.

As an institution , we remain committed to supporting young people to move beyond being beneficiaries and become leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs shaping the future of Zimbabwe's food systems.

A climate-resilient and food-secure Zimbabwe will be built by empowered young people who are equipped with the skills, resources, and opportunities to turn their ideas into impact.

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing young people reap what they have sown. Students from Prestige High School are now harvesting produce from their school garden, a testament to their hard work and commitment.

Through this initiative, they are gaining practical agroecological skills while enjoying the tangible benefits of sustainable food production, skills and knowledge they can take home and share with their communities.

Today, the team visited Maranatha High School, where the food forest is continuing to grow. The trees planted last year are thriving, with even more crops and plants set to be introduced in the space. Beyond growing food, the initiative is nurturing environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and hands-on learning among students.

It’s inspiring to witness how the students are taking ownership of the food forest and we’re excited to see how they cascade what they are learning to their homes and within their communities.

Greenhut attended the Conservation Symposium held in celebration of World Biodiversity Day, hosted by Christian Brothers College. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting biodiversity and to encourage young people to take an active role in environmental conservation.

Students from other schools, including and Dominican Convent, were also in attendance. Organisations such as Kusasa Hub, Amnesty, and the Environmental Management Agency participated in the event. It was an enriching learning experience, providing students with an opportunity to learn from one another and share their knowledge on biodiversity conservation.

It was inspiring to witness the students’ enthusiasm for becoming and their commitment to developing solutions that help protect and preserve biodiversity for future generations.

Happy Africa Day 💚

We celebrated Africa Day yesterday at the Amagugu International Heritage Centre. It was a meaningful day of learning for our youth champions as they explored how our heritage and culture can be integrated into urban food systems and help reshape existing narratives.

Through the Project, we continue to promote indigenous foods as a pathway towards a more future

Today we celebrate World Bee Day as a reminder that tiny pollinators play a huge role in sustaining life on Earth. 🐝🌍

Bees are essential to our food systems. They pollinate many of the fruits, vegetables, nuts and crops that feed our communities, support biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience. Without pollinators, food production, nutrition, and livelihoods are all at risk.

This year’s World highlights the long-standing relationship between people and bees, and how traditional knowledge, innovation, and inclusive approaches can help protect pollinators while improving livelihoods for communities, women, and youth involved in beekeeping.

Protecting bees means protecting ecosystems, indigenous plants, sustainable agriculture, and the future of our urban and rural food systems. Healthy pollinators contribute to healthier communities and a healthier planet.

As pollinators continue to decline due to climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices, we all have a role to play:
🌼 Plant indigenous flowers and trees
🌱 Protect natural habitats
🚫 Reduce harmful pesticide use
🐝 Support sustainable beekeeping and local farmers

Last week, the organisation participated in a partners meeting for the at Masiye Camp in Motopo. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the project’s progress, reflect on the impact created so far, and assess the work that has been done within communities.

Partners also engaged in discussions focused on shaping the next phase of the project, identifying priorities, strengthening collaboration, and exploring ways to create even greater and more sustainable impact moving forward.

The meeting was not only a moment of reflection, but also an opportunity to re-energise efforts and align our vision for greater impact moving forward.

One of the greatest indicators of impact is when a project continues long after the banners come down and the event ends. 🌱♻️

Following our waste management initiative at the just-ended ZITF, implemented together with CCJP Bulawayo and its dedicated volunteers, we are excited to see something beautiful happening — the learning did not stay and end at the exhibition grounds.

CCJP Volunteers have now returned to their own communities and are beginning to practically share and teach others what they learned through the programme. From waste separation to understanding the value of recyclables and the role communities play in building a circular economy, the knowledge is already spreading.

This reminds us that what we started at was never just a one-week intervention. It was the beginning of a movement.

At Green Hut , our goal has always been to ensure that solutions are not imposed but co-designed with communities. We believe real change happens when people become owners of the process and not just beneficiaries of it.

Sustainability for us means creating interventions that communities can continue carrying forward independently — where change does not depend on our presence as an organisation, but is driven by communities themselves.

We are proud to see seeds planted at ZITF already taking root and growing beyond us. 💚
