What a proud moment! After 44 days of nurturing, learning and growing, we are thrilled to celebrate our first harvest of fresh oyster mushrooms from Luveve Training School for Girls!

This initiative is supported by Hivos through the Urban Futures Project, creating opportunities for practical skills development, sustainable livelihoods and hands-on agroecology learning.

9 Days of Growing!

Today marks 9 days since we planted our strawberries, and we’re already so happy with the progress! 🥹🍓

As part of the NutriGrow Garden initiative, we are embracing innovative and water-efficient approaches to food production through the introduction of vertical bucket farming systems.

On 18 August, we trained 45 young people on how to establish and manage vertical bucket farming systems, with a focus on strawberry production. The system allows crops to be grown vertically while using less water, making it a practical approach to sustainable food production in spaces where water and land are limited.

Following the training, we successfully planted 352 hybrid strawberry plants across our vertical bucket systems. 🍓🍓

39 Days of Mushroom Growth!

Today marks exactly 39 days since we planted our oyster mushrooms on 19 July, and we are so excited to see the progress!!

The majority of our mushroom bags are now fully colonised, with only a few failing to colonise. Even more exciting, some of the bags have already entered the fruiting stage, with mushroom pins appearing and developing into beautiful, healthy oyster mushrooms. 🍄✨

Seeing the mushrooms emerge, grow bigger each day, and bring our work to life has been incredibly rewarding. We are so happy with the progress and looking forward to the harvest!

On 19 July, we set out to equip young girls with practical skills in mushroom production and sustainable waste utilisation.

Through the training, 45 young girls and 5 staff members at Luveve Training School for Girls were trained in mushroom production, learning how waste materials can be repurposed to produce nutritious food while creating opportunities for future livelihoods.

Using cotton waste as a substrate, we prepared the foundation for our oyster mushroom production. Together, we successfully planted 160 bags of oyster mushrooms. 🍄

At the beginning of the 2026 Urban Futures financial year, the Bulawayo Urban Futures Project made a commitment to establish a Nutri Grow garden at Luveve Training School for Girls. The initiative was born from a desire to equip young girls with practical knowledge and skills in agroecology, while also creating opportunities to generate income that could contribute towards their reintegration into the community. The initiative is supported by Hivos through the Urban Futures Project, whose support has been instrumental in advancing this vision.

The Nutri Grow garden was therefore envisioned as more than just a space for growing food. It was designed as a learning platform where young girls could gain hands-on skills in sustainable agriculture, understand the importance of agroecological practices, and explore opportunities for livelihoods, entrepreneurship and greater self-reliance.

Since the beginning of this journey, we have taken a number of steps to turn this vision into reality. From preparing the site and introducing sustainable farming practices to mobilising resources, engaging young people and continuously improving the garden, every step has brought us closer to the vision we started with.

Today, we are excited and proud to share our journey and reflect on how far we have come. The Nutri Grow garden at Luveve Training School for Girls is gradually taking shape, and with every seed planted, every lesson learned and every challenge overcome, we are seeing the potential of this initiative come to life.

This is not just a story about a garden. It is a story about skills, opportunity, sustainability and hope — and most importantly, about creating pathways for young girls to build more resilient and independent futures. With the continued support of Hivos through the Urban Futures Project, Nutri Grow is growing not only food, but also knowledge, confidence, opportunity and hope for the future.

Our team has been hard at work constructing raised garden beds at our Innovation Hub, which is currently undergoing renovations as part of the establishment of our Disability Inclusive Gardens.

These raised beds will form part of our Nutri Garden, creating an accessible and inclusive space where people with disabilities, youth, and the wider community can learn, grow nutritious food, and embrace climate-smart agricultural practices.

This is more than just a garden—it's an investment in inclusion, sustainability, food security, and community empowerment.

This initiative is proudly supported by Hivos, whose commitment to inclusive and sustainable development is helping us create opportunities where everyone can grow and thrive.

Last week, our Urban Futures teams from Bulawayo and Mutare came together for a Training of Trainers (ToT) facilitated by Impact Hub under the Urban Futures Programme.

The training provided a valuable platform to reflect on the progress of our Innovation Hubs, share experiences, and collectively envision what an ideal, community-driven innovation hub should look like. Key discussions focused on governance structures, leadership, effective team management, and strategies for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the hubs beyond project funding.

Together, we explored practical approaches to developing income-generating initiatives, strengthening institutional capacity, and creating resilient innovation spaces that will continue to empower young people and communities for years to come.

We appreciate Impact Hub for facilitating this insightful learning experience and remain committed to building sustainable, inclusive, and impactful Innovation Hubs that drive positive change.
