AfriPRIME joins NUST and the Nation to Welcome Back Seven Exchange Students

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has officially welcomed home a cohort of seven undergraduate and postgraduate scholars following their successful deployment to European technical institutions under the 2026 Student Mobility Exchange Programme.
The welcoming ceremony, held inside the university’s Council Chambers, took a compelling turn when the floor was handed over to the student representatives. In a structured dual perspective on the global mobility program, the university administration listened to back-to-back addresses from postgraduate scholar Aisha Mabika and undergraduate student Tanaka Zinyengere, detailing both the immense triumphs and the stark geopolitical realities of navigating international territory as Zimbabwean youths.
The returning delegation, whose tenures were divided between premier research hubs in Sweden and Latvia, represents a significant stride in cross-border knowledge transfer and structural innovation for the region.
Among the returning students is Zinyengere, an Information Management and Technology scholar who completed his exchange tenure at Riga Technical University (RTU) in Latvia under the Erasmus+ Student Mobility initiative. Before his deployment to the Baltics, Zinyengere was already heavily embedded in the local ecosystem as the President of both the InfoMinds Club and AfriPRIME, a former Bulawayo Junior Councillor, and NUST Campus Director for the Hult Prize.
Taking the podium after Mabika, Zinyengere framed the journey not just as an academic milestone, but as an intense catalyst for personal evolution. "During this journey, we all lost something, gained something, and return as entirely new people," Zinyengere stated.
While learning at RTU, Zinyengere rapidly broke into highly competitive international spaces. He became a voting representative under the RTU International Students Council (ISC), working directly over the student parliament and representing international students—a rare feat for an exchange student.
His tenure in the Baltic region was defined by relentless exposure to Europe's frontier tech sectors. Zinyengere attended the TechChill 2026 startup convention, competed in Europe’s largest hackathon by Cipsa in Poland, and volunteered at Estonia’s premier technology summit, Ctrl+Shift. These experiences culminated in the rapid development of three live web applications built using modern prompt-engineering frameworks: clippedin, squeakyp, and catalyner.
From joining tech networks and cultural dance communities to meeting high-profile people such as Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, the NUST delegation consistently forced its way into rooms of global influence, transforming what began as a temporary transit group through Egypt into a deeply resilient family unit. However, the presentations did not shy away from the institutional and geopolitical friction points that isolate Zimbabwean talent on the international stage.
The student speakers highlighted the chilling reality of the journey, noting that while other international students they met along the transit route tragically passed away, faced arrest in Egypt, or suffered assaults, the NUST cohort safely navigated the gauntlet.
Once within the European Union, systemic barriers immediately restricted their potential. Due to geopolitical restrictions and sanctions, the Zimbabwean students found themselves locked out of vital global digital banking infrastructure, including platforms like Revolut, stifling their ability to seamlessly operate in Europe’s modern digital-first economy.
"Innovation has taken a completely different form in Europe compared to the traditional, physical-product economy we see in Zimbabwe," Zinyengere noted, pointing out that local frameworks must rapidly evolve to match the digital and virtual landscapes of global tech.
Looking forward, the returning scholars outlined a clear mandate: to establish comprehensive preparatory programs at NUST to equip future outbound students for life abroad, while calling on the university administration for continuous reintegration and emotional support.
Zinyengere and his peers challenged NUST to aggressively claim its seat at international tables, emphasizing that student-led innovation is the primary driver of institutional modernization. The delegation urged the university to look beyond traditional sectors and tap into uncharted, high-value industries observed during their exchange, including 3D printing and space technologies, Near-Field Communication (NFC) systems, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) ecosystems, and advanced cloud-based student portals.
"There is a massive amount of untapped potential within NUST," Zinyengere concluded. "Other nations could not even bring representatives to these global tables because their universities simply chose not to care or support them. NUST's commitment to our growth must not only continue—it must expand through alternative routes to ensure our minds are never left out of global innovations."
The full returning cohort features diverse academic representations across multiple faculties, including doctoral candidates Tichaona Majona and Alfonce Muzatha (Uppsala University, Sweden), alongside Sidumile Dumoluhle Ncube, Muzingaye Thaka, Aisha Mabika, and Cathrine Phiri, who completed their tenures across specialized technical disciplines in Latvia.
