Bekezela HBC

Bekezela HBC Bekezela Home Based Care (BHBC) was founded in 1994 by the late Director Mrs. I. Saungweme who worked as a nurse at the local hospital.

Bolstering initiatives and building the capacity of communities in the Districts to fight NCDs, HIV, and, AIDS and negative impacts on individuals, households and society at large. This was in response to the suffering that she saw when HIV-positive people were discharged to their homes to go and wait for their fate as by then there were no ARVs. The organization, therefore, started off focussing

on home-based care for these patients and later on in response to the needs of the communities expanded to cater for the gaps that were realized during programming. The Organisation has offices in Bubi District, Matabeleland North Province, next to Inyathi District Hospital, and in Bulawayo. The reason for founding the Organisation was to fight the negative impact of HIV and AIDS and also to disseminate information on the same. Up to date, the Organisation operates in Matabeleland North and Bulawayo Metropolitan province.

Last Week Shayne DC one of our International Youth Network tdhs Delegate took the initiative to represent Bekezela and join other young people under terre des hommes schweiz and Terre des hommes Germany Southern Africa Region to share reflections, experiences and lessons from previous engagements. For Shayne, what stood out was the energy in the room as new young people were welcomed and introduced to the programs and opportunities within MASO Youth Network

Shayne also shared his journey from being a young person with little exposure, to finding purpose, growth, and empowerment through Bekezela's support and access to life-changing opportunities. As a result, conversations in the room encouraged new MASO Youth Network members to step forward and become part of a movement that is going to change lives.

Shayne’s participation in this platform not only strengthens Bekezela’s Youth Participation and Inclusion strategic pillar, but is also a call to action for young people to be moved beyond tokenistic inclusion to meaningful engagement in policy-making spaces where their voices are not only present, but actively heard, valued, and able to influence decisions, shape outcomes, and where their contributions are taken seriously as drivers of development.

With support from the OXFAM Agility Fund, Bekezela HBC recently strengthened women and girls' livelihoods at a time when many families are facing uncertainty due to funding cuts and economic shocks. This support will help many women and girls to expand opportunities and economic empowerment.

Through this intervention, Bekezela deepened collaboration with the Bubi Rural District Council's Gender and Local Economic Development committee by providing women with an industrial overlocking machine that will transform small businesses and restore dignity through income generation. For many women, this is more than a machine it is a pathway to financial independence and stability.

In addition, the fund also assisted 11 girls and young women who were initially supported by the terre des hommes schweiz “Creating Safe Spaces for Young People in Bubi District” program. They received poultry starter kits which have strengthened their resilience, confidence and the ability to sustain their existing income generating projects giving them a chance for long-term empowerment.

This week Bekezela HBC engaged communities through Surveys in Bubi District to better understand perceptions and attitudes towards unpaid care work. and care related advocacy. Through conversations and lived experiences, one thing that stood out on unpaid care work that it is a daily reality, mostly carried by women and girls, from fetching water and firewood to cooking and caring for children. this work is essential but often goes unrecognized.

Women and Girls highlighted that this invisible work was done often at the expense of their own opportunities and economic empowerment. Men and Boys highlighted the need to recognize, represent and reward unpaid care work for collective social change.

These are the everyday experiences behind the data, the stories, the resilience, and the invisible labour that keeps households, communities and economies running.

Last week, Bekezela successfully hosted its 2026 Annual Facilitators Training under the Creating Safe Spaces for Young People in Bubi District initiative funded by terre des hommes schweiz. The training was expertly coordinated by our Out-of-School Team Lead, Phillpah M. Dengura, focused on critical issues affecting young people today including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and substance abuse awareness.

What made it even more impactful was that our facilitators Dalitso Shayne and Charamba Johntook the stage and facilitated engaging sessions on the roles and responsibilities of a facilitator and introduced participants to the International Youth Network, among other key topics. Lastly, to ensure the safety and protection of all young people, Faith Sharleen Nkala led an important session on Bekezela’s safeguarding policy, practices, and procedures strengthening our commitment to creating safe, supportive spaces for every young person allowing them to reach their full potential.
