🌍✨ Proud Moment for Youth Support Network Trust!

Back in July 2025, Youth Support Network Trust was awarded a grant by the Bulawayo City Council under the Youth Climate Action Fund – Round 2! 🎉

Through this grant, we launched our project “Waste Sorting”, focusing on waste reduction, minimisation, and raising awareness on climate action through art. This award has been a huge milestone in empowering young people to take the lead in creating a cleaner, greener Bulawayo. 💚♻️

We remain deeply grateful to the Bulawayo City Council, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and our dedicated community for walking this journey with us. Together, we are making waste management smarter and sustainability a shared culture. 🌱 https://www.citybyo.co.zw/Downloads/Round2_latest_update_7may2025

The City is currently implementing the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund Project where 90 cities across five continents have received a grant to fund youth-led climate initiatives.

On Friday, we had our first mental health session with Nashville High School in Gweru under our School-Based Mental Health Programme in partnership with MIET Africa

Our aims were simple:
1. To find out how much students know about mental health/mental illness
2. To use edutainment as a platform of delivering mental health knowledge (this was led by the students themselves)
3. To fill in on the gaps of knowledge.

When it comes to autism, no two autistics are alike. Some can communicate, others can’t, and will never be able to. Some can talk, but prefer to communicate nonverbally. Some love to talk, while others are quiet. Some prefer identity-first language, and others use person-first. Some will live independently, and others require 24/7 care for life. Some like the puzzle piece symbol, others don’t. Some have an impressive “splinter skill”, but most do not. When it comes to autism, we all have different abilities and varied opinions. There isn’t a single autistic voice, and there’s not a single form of autism. If you’re looking to learn more about autism, have conversations with an autistic person, and then another, and then another. But remember, some people with autism cannot communicate, whether verbal or otherwise, so to get to know them, you might have to talk to the people closest to them, those who care for them and often will for their entire life. Quote on the letter board by Dr. Stephen Shore.

why mental health awareness is so important?
Because, people frequently suffer in silence and refuse treatment because of stigma and misunderstandings around mental health disorders. Students' emotional well-being, social life, and academic performance can all be impacted by their mental health. While individuals who are not struggling may be more enthusiastic about their schooling, social interactions, and other aspects of life, those who are struggling may face more major obstacles throughout school and adulthood.
That's why Mental health awareness is an important initiative to improve understanding of mental health conditions and increase access to healthcare for those who need it.

Children and adolescents are negatively impacted by the lack of awareness and poor knowledge about common mental disorders that contributes to pervasive stigmas that prevent young people from seeking help when needed. This, combined with the shortage of healthcare providers trained to effectively treat young people with mental disorders has created an environment where many young people suffer in silence.
For this reason, on the 3rd day of August 2022, Youth Support Network Trust in partnership with the Future-Life Now program and MIET Africa hosted a Youth Mental Health Webinar titled " -Languishing-to-Flourishing”. We aimed to provide 60 young people with a platform for genuine connection, encouraging them to field their questions to mental health experts, generate mental health awareness among young people, and strengthen demand for integrated mental health and psychosocial interventions.
In the panel, we had a variety of speakers including mental health experts and young people with lived experiences. One of the key takeaway points was that” young people should not wait for their mental illness to reach a crisis point but challenges should be addressed as they arise”.
