It was a hive of activity this past weekend in Nkayi, at Dakamela Village, where about 7000 people converged over two days at Dakamela Village, under Chief Dakamela as they celebrated the culture of the Ndebele people. The event, which also coincides with the Commemoration of Chief Dakamela's installation day which took place 3 years ago, is now a huge crowd puller, with people of all walks of life coming from all the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. The Chief also awarded various prizes to individuals, organisations, and corporates who have made significant contributions to society in Nkayi and also in their places of domain. HEFO, being a locally based NGO, was among the exhibitors at the event. It showcased some of its interventions, which are shown below:

"I can do it too"

A conducive environment is what we need to be at Par with others. Metron Dube with paralysis beats the odds. She has vibrant vegetable beds in an empowerment livelihood garden, Ward 16 Nkayi, along with other women in her community.

Drilling and solarization has improved access to water and transformed people of Njombolo village, Nkayi Ward 28. These villagers would walk for up to 5km to fetch water from Shangani river bed. Provision of water has seen livelihood gardens sprouting up; livestock now have access to water - something that cushions them against climate-change-induced El Nino effect.

HEFO received their invited Australian partner representative (TEAR) in wards 15, 16, and 28. The two partners toured project sites in the listed wards. These projects include water points and gardens where over 300 women are benefitting. Among those are people living with disabilities are included. It is a pride to see Nkayi people taking ownership of these interventions and to see some replicating these in their own homes.

Also, drilling and solarisation of boreholes since 2012 have assisted close to 13000 animals during this Elnino dry spell for wards listed above.

Fun Day
A fun day that was hosted by Zinyangeni Primary School saw learners from Duhamuzondo Primary, Hadane Secondary and the host school coming together to end 2023 in style. A variety of ball games, challenge competitions and plays decorated the day. HEFO staff, teachers and parents participated in these games. Those who attended will never forget a netball match between male and female teachers in which the former group emerged victorious. It was also eye catching to see lady teachers taking penalty kicks in soccer. The day was worth it. We look forward to having more such event as they seem to bond teachers, learners, parents and programme staff.
