As Girls Gone Political, we are intentional about building not just passion for leadership, but the skills and knowledge needed to influence systems effectively.

Our Movement Lead, Chanda Dorothy Mtanga, together with our Political Engagement Lead, Anna Banda, had the opportunity to participate in a Policy Engagement & Advocacy/Proposal Writing Training hosted by the Women and Girls Fund.

The training deepened our understanding of different types of proposals, how to develop strong and fundable concepts, and the importance of strategic, evidence-based advocacy using a Human Rights-Based Approach.

One thing became even clearer: advocacy without evidence struggles to move policy, and passion without strategy rarely shifts power. As young women in political organizing, we must strengthen our ability to engage institutions, influence policy spaces, and design solutions that are informed, inclusive, and impactful.

We are grateful for the learning, the conversations, and the continued investment in young women leaders who are working to transform political participation and civic engagement in Zambia.

The work continues. โœŠ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’œ

Our movement Lead Chanda Dorothy Mtanga took part in a benchmarking and learning visit in Malawi alongside members of the Zambia Parliamentary Womenโ€™s Caucus.

This experience was a powerful reminder that advancing womenโ€™s political participation requires more than conversations, it requires solidarity, strategy, and intentional investment in womenโ€™s leadership across the region.

From exchanging ideas on strengthening womenโ€™s caucuses to discussing practical pathways for increasing young womenโ€™s participation in decision-making spaces ahead of the 2026 elections, the engagement reinforced the importance of regional collaboration in shaping inclusive democracies.

Girls Gone Political remains committed to building bold, informed, and capable young women leaders who are ready to influence policy, occupy political spaces, and transform governance systems.

Grateful to Oxfam in Southern Africa for the invitation and for creating spaces that center womenโ€™s leadership and collective action.

WE ARE DONE ASKING FOR SPACE. YOUNG WOMEN ARE LEADING NOW.๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ

Across Zambia, we are witnessing a quiet but powerful shift in our institutions of Higher Learning!

More young women are stepping into student leadership spaces, not just participating, but shaping agendas, influencing decisions, and redefining what meaningful youth leadership looks like on our campuses. It reflects years of persistence in spaces that have not always been welcoming or inclusive to young women.

Student unions remain critical training grounds for national leadership. Yet, for a long time, young women have been encouraged to take up secondary or supportive roles rather than lead from the front.
We have already seen what is possible.

We have already seen what is possible. When Dr Tapiwa Lukuta became the first female President at the University of Lusaka, it was more than a milestone. It was a reminder that leadership has never been beyond young women, only too often withheld.

Today, we are proud of the young women across Zambia holding leadership roles in student unions. You are not tokens. You are leaders. And you deserve to lead fully, not from the margins, not in supporting roles, but at the centre of decision-making.
To every young woman in these spaces: take up your space without apology. You do not need permission to lead.

And to the men who share these spaces: this moment is stronger when you choose to support it. Leadership is not diminished when it is shared, it is strengthened.

As Girls Gone Political, this is work we are committed to. We will continue to support young womenโ€™s participation not only in political and governance spaces, but across all facets of leadership. From classrooms to boardrooms, from student unions to national platforms, we will keep pushing until young women leading is no longer seen as exceptional, but normal.

This is what change looks like. And it is only the beginning. Wapyaaa Baisaaaa Viva Momaaa Vivaaaa!

Our Girls Gone Political (GGP) Core Team led by Chanda Dorothy Mtanga , Mapalo Kombe, Ivy Bupe Nambeye Rose Kanyinji and Model Parliament Hon. Members Chifunda Kaite Violet Mazimba had a productive engagement at the U.S. Embassy Zambia (American Spaces), where we participated in a dialogue convened by the Zambia US Exchange alumni focused on youth and womenโ€™s participation in civic engagement and governance.

The session created space for an honest exchange on both the opportunities and challenges ahead of the August 2026 General Elections. We reflected on the progress made in expanding participation, while also acknowledging persistent gaps that continue to limit meaningful inclusion, particularly for young women. Importantly, we also shared insights from our ongoing civic initiatives, rooted in grassroots mobilization, voter education, and strengthening democratic accountability.

In addition, we are proud to share that GGP successfully made its submission to the Parliamentary Committee on Youth National Assembly of Zambia ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ regarding the proposed National Youth Development Council (Amendment) Bill No. 24 of 2026. Our submission reflects the voices and priorities of young people, and contributes to ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional governance frameworks that support youth development and participation in Zambia.

As we approach 2026, engagements like these remain critical. They allow us to bridge dialogue with action, and ensure that young people, especially young women, are not only part of the conversation, but are actively shaping the future of governance in Zambia. ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ

KNOW YOUR CANDIDATE: 26-year-old Susan Mulala eyes Mwense Central

A YOUNG graduate has positioned herself to challenge David Mabumbaโ€™s 15 years uninterrupted record as Mwense Central Constituency member of parliament.

Susan Mulala is a 26-year-old social worker and fresh University of Zambia graduand who believes it is time for young people to rise and take responsibility for the future of their communities.

Post August 13, 2026, she might probably be among the list of Zambiaโ€™s youngest Members of Parliament.

For 15 years, Mwense Central Constituency has known only one MP by the name of David Mabumba, a seasoned politician and one of Luapula Provinceโ€™s familiar parliamentary faces.

โ€œI am connected to Mwense. I am a child of Mwense. Most of my family members are here and now that I have completed school, I have come back to serve my people,โ€ Susan told .

Born in Loto Village of Mwense District, Susan spent some time in Lusaka where she pursued her education from primary school all the way to university level.

She attended Crown of Life Trust School in Ng'ombe before writing her Grade Seven exams at Ng'ombe Primary School, junior secondary at Ng'ombe Basic School and senior secondary at Chelstone Secondary School.

After passing her exams, she enrolled at the University of Zambia where she studied for a Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Social Work and is expected to graduate this year with a credit.

During her stay at UNZA, Susan served as vice president for the Social Workers Association in 2025 and also worked as a peer educator through UNZA Clinic in conjunction with UNZA Response for three years.

Despite spending her time in Lusaka, her attachment to Mwense remained strong.

Susan said what pushed her into politics was seeing the daily struggles of residents in health, education, roads, farming and youth empowerment.

โ€œI know what our people are going through. We need quality healthcare, better schools, improved roads and empowerment for women and youths,โ€ she said.

Her plan for Mwense is to improve schools where some classrooms even carry more than 100 pupils at once.

โ€œI will make sure we build more classrooms, provide desks and improve the learning environment because children cannot learn properly in an overcrowded classroom,โ€ she said.

On health, Susan wants clinics equipped with medicine, water, beds and maternity facilities.

On agriculture, Susan wants farmers to receive inputs on time and in sufficient quantities while also introducing fish farming through fishponds.

โ€œWe have land and water in Mwense. We can create jobs and food security through aquaculture and farming if we plan properly,โ€ she explained.

She also wants to tackle early marriages, child abuse and teenage pregnancies while promoting education for both girls and boys.

โ€œNo child should be forced into marriage at 15 or 16 when they should be in school building their future,โ€ Susan stated.

As of now, Susan is seeking adoption on the ruling UPND ticket as Mwense Central candidate in the August 13 general election.
