🤝 Partnering for Human Rights & Good Governance!

The Monze District Land Alliance is proud to announce that our District Coordinator, Mr. Eslony Hatimbula, and Finance and Administration Officer, Mr. Thomas Mweemba, recently attended a vital 2-day co-creation workshop at the Lusaka Grand Palace Hotel.
Organised by ActionAid Zambia, this strategic meeting brought together 11 partner organisations from across the country. It is part of the "Strengthening Civil Society Effectiveness in Promoting Good Governance and Increasing Citizens' Awareness and Demand for Human Rights Phase II" Project, generously funded by the Swedish Government through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

As we look ahead, this collaborative space allowed partners to lay a solid foundation for our communities by:
• Reviewing core goals: Aligning project objectives, implementation steps, and expected outcomes.
• Building unity: Fostering strong collaboration and shared ownership among all 11 national partners.
• Strategic planning: Setting key priorities, coordination systems, and peer-to-peer learning mechanisms.
• Securing the future: Developing powerful approaches to boost the impact and sustainability of our community work.
By uniting our efforts, we are ensuring that civil society remains strong, citizens are aware of their rights, and good governance is championed at every level.

This week, Monze District Land Alliance (MDLA) is conducting the ongoing Joint Training Workshop in Monze with selected chiefdoms. The training brings together Local Court Magistrates and Clerks, Chiefs, Traditional Leaders, and Community-Based Paralegals to build stronger collaboration between formal and traditional justice systems.
Yesterday, 17 June 2026, we successfully concluded a two-day training session with the first group of Local Court Magistrates, Traditional Leaders, and paralegals from Monze District, and we are continuing with the second group starting on 18th June 2026. MDLA is committed to ensuring that more voices and experiences help shape accessible, transparent, and community-driven justice.

Together, we are reaffirming our commitment to justice for all, especially for women and vulnerable groups, by strengthening dialogue, cooperation, and practical solutions at the community level.

Day Two marked the successful close of our Joint Training Workshop on Enhancing Justice at Community Level. The workshop brought together Local Court Magistrates and Clerks, Chiefs and Traditional Leaders, Traditional Court Officials, and Community-Based Paralegals from Rufunsa, Kafue, Chongwe, and Shibuyunji.

Participants explored the Gender Transformative Approach (GTA), reflecting on inequality, intersectionality, and barriers faced by women, children, and persons with disabilities in accessing justice.

They also strengthened collaboration between Local Courts and Traditional Leaders, developing Chiefdom Joint Action Plans and committing to establish Community Justice Boards (CJBs) and community legal desks to bring justice closer to the people.
The workshop closed with consensus on the way forward, reaffirming the importance of partnerships between formal and traditional justice systems. Participants left motivated to implement the joint action plans and share the knowledge gained in their courts, chiefdoms, and communities.

Together, we are building a justice system that is inclusive, fair, and responsive to community needs.

On 8th June, Day One of the Joint Training Workshop for Local Court Magistrates and Clerks, Chiefs, Traditional Court Officials, and Community-Based Paralegals is being held at Ndozo Lodge, Lusaka, under the EnACT Programme with support from GIZ and the European Union.

The purpose of the meeting is to strengthen access to justice at the community level by fostering collaboration between formal and traditional justice systems, ensuring disputes are resolved in a fair, transparent, and affordable manner. Sessions focused on sensitizing participants to the concept of primary justice, its features, stakeholders, strengths, and challenges.

Key topics included experiences in handling land disputes, inheritance cases, boundary conflicts, and the role of paralegals in mediation and community sensitization.

Participants raised concerns around jurisdictional overlaps, appointment of Local Court staff, the Intestate Succession Act, and recognition of paralegals. Facilitators clarified the roles of Local Courts and Traditional Courts in customary matters, emphasizing consultation, collaboration, and mutual respect.

Day One laid a strong foundation for dialogue, learning, and joint action planning, reaffirming the collective commitment to enhance justice services for vulnerable and marginalized communities in Zambia.

"🌍 Empowering Communities in Southern Zambia

Real change is happening in Monze and Gwembe Districts!

Through a strong partnership between Zambia Land Alliance and SHARE Trust, A micro-grant of K 368,000 has been disbursed to 11 savings groups, formed, trained, and mentored by Monze District Land Alliance, reaching 165 direct beneficiaries (129 women, 41 youths, and 1 person living with disabilities) and 825 indirect beneficiaries.

These groups, based in Chief Monze, Chief Munyumbwe, and Chief Chipepo chiefdoms, will use this support to strengthen their livelihoods, build financial independence, and promote sustainable resource management.

💡 What makes this initiative truly powerful? 20% of the interest generated from this Microgrant will be reinvested into the community—supporting orphaned children, widowed women, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups.

This is more than funding—it’s communities empowering themselves and creating lasting impact.

Monze District Land Alliance (MDLA) together with the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DiHR) with support from GIZ under the EnACT program is hosting a joint meeting for Traditional Leaders, Judiciary, Local Court Magistrates and Paralegals from Choma, Itezhi Tezhi, Macha, Mapanza and Pemba Chiefdoms of Southern Province. The training being facilitated by officials from the Judiciary, DiHR and MDLA is part of the phase 2 of the Enhancement of Justice in the traditional courts. This training workshop which has been running from 9th to 13th February 2026 at Mana Nest Lodge aims to increase access to justice for rural Zambians through sensitization at chiefdom level for traditional leaders and encourage cooperation between traditional courts, local courts and civil society organization (CSOs) through joint workshops to bring about compliance and primary justice mechanism with constitutional guarantees and greater respect for the users of traditional courts (women, children and persons with disabilities).

MICROGRANTING COMMUNITY SAVING GROUPS

A joint team from Monze District Land Alliance (MDLA) and Zambia Land Alliance (ZLA) through support from The Share Trust visited 27 existing saving groups from 2nd to 6th February within Gwembe district (Munyumbwe and Chipepo Chiefdoms) and Monze district ( Monze Chiefdom) in Southern Province of Zambia. The aim of the visit was to assess functional community saving groups established by ZLA for micro-granting. Through the grants, group members in 10 selected groups will use the fund to boost their businesses and increase their household income.
