I had the honor of giving a keynote speech at the Zambia Manganese Mining Indaba, been held at Sali Riverside Lodge in Mansa. The indaba is looking at the development of the manganese mining sector in Zambia. I am grateful to have the presence of fellow traditional leaders from Central Province, their participation is crucial in discussing the future of mining.
I extend my appreciation to the Guest of Honor - Minister of Mines, Honorable Paul Kabuswe, and President Hakainde Hichilema for their commitment to driving developmental initiatives across the country. Together, we can bring positive change to Zambia.
The following are key points from my speech;
β’ Mining plays a vital role in job creation and national development. However, there are disparities between Luapula Province and other regions where mining has led to infrastructure improvements
β’ Traditional leaders should be involved in policy development, especially to protect our customary land from large-scale mining investments. Let's work together to find a balance between customary rights, surface rights and mining rights.
β’ We need transparency in the way mining licenses are issued to ensure our communities are not disadvantaged.
β’ Central Province's smelting of manganese is a positive step towards reducing raw material exports. We need increased electricity production in Luapula Province to establish smelters and create more jobs.
β’ Child labor in the mining sector is a pressing concern. We must provide decent jobs to support families and prevent school dropouts.
β’ Let's have productive discussions and make decisions that bring positive changes to Luapula Province, Central Province, and all of Zambia. Empowering chiefdom trusts to own mines will contribute to sustainable development.
β’ Compliance with the law is crucial. We must end illegal mining and maximize the sector's potential to generate revenue for the government.
β’ Together, we can develop Luapula Province, Central Province, and Zambia as a whole. Collaboration between the government, traditional leaders, and mining companies is essential. Let's create a thriving environment for our people.
