COLLABORATIVE DIALOGUE ON NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY: ENGAGING WITH HOUSE OF CHIEFS CHAIRPERSON

I am thrilled to announce our collaboration with traditional leaders in our efforts to combat the current drought which has been declared a disaster and emergency by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Together, we're weaving traditional wisdom with modern strategies to mitigate the impact of drought on our communities. This morning at the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, we were honored to host His Royal Highness Chief Chisunka of the Ushi people of Luapula Province.

In addition to being the leader of the Ushi Chiefs of Mansa District, the traditional leader also serves as the Chairperson of the House of Chiefs as well as the Luapula Council of Chiefs.

Our discussions centered around various critical topics, including Agriculture and Food Security in the face of the severe drought. The traditional leader shared his wisdom and knowledge on how the country has dealt with severe drought situations in the past and how the government can respond to the same problem today.

Traditional leaders have a crucial role to play in the development of our country owing to their proximity to the people. We are glad that the House of Chiefs has pledged to support and work closely with the government in addressing the drought situation.

By bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, we're not only preserving our cultural heritage but also securing a more resilient future for generations to come.

Unity is a remedy in times of problem and we will definitely overcome the challenge before us. Let's honor the past as we forge ahead towards a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.

I had the honor of giving a keynote speech at the Zambia Manganese Mining Indaba, been held at Sali Riverside Lodge in Mansa. The indaba is looking at the development of the manganese mining sector in Zambia. I am grateful to have the presence of fellow traditional leaders from Central Province, their participation is crucial in discussing the future of mining.
I extend my appreciation to the Guest of Honor - Minister of Mines, Honorable Paul Kabuswe, and President Hakainde Hichilema for their commitment to driving developmental initiatives across the country. Together, we can bring positive change to Zambia.

The following are key points from my speech;

β€’ Mining plays a vital role in job creation and national development. However, there are disparities between Luapula Province and other regions where mining has led to infrastructure improvements

β€’ Traditional leaders should be involved in policy development, especially to protect our customary land from large-scale mining investments. Let's work together to find a balance between customary rights, surface rights and mining rights.

β€’ We need transparency in the way mining licenses are issued to ensure our communities are not disadvantaged.

β€’ Central Province's smelting of manganese is a positive step towards reducing raw material exports. We need increased electricity production in Luapula Province to establish smelters and create more jobs.

β€’ Child labor in the mining sector is a pressing concern. We must provide decent jobs to support families and prevent school dropouts.

β€’ Let's have productive discussions and make decisions that bring positive changes to Luapula Province, Central Province, and all of Zambia. Empowering chiefdom trusts to own mines will contribute to sustainable development.

β€’ Compliance with the law is crucial. We must end illegal mining and maximize the sector's potential to generate revenue for the government.

β€’ Together, we can develop Luapula Province, Central Province, and Zambia as a whole. Collaboration between the government, traditional leaders, and mining companies is essential. Let's create a thriving environment for our people.
