Thrilled to highlight the Advanced Fistula Surgery Workshop currently taking place to strengthen surgical care for women in Tanzania and Zambia!

Led by the esteemed Professor Fekade, a consultant urogynecologist from Ethiopia, this hands-on training has brought together 11 dedicated surgeons (9 from Tanzania, 2 from Zambia) to master the management of complex birth injuries.

We are especially grateful to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) for their generous support of the two Zambian surgeons ( Dr. Wi***es Silwimba from UTH & Dr. Mubanga Mwamba Kwangu from St. Francis Hospital), making their participation possible.

The focus is clear: advanced skills, patient-centered care, and regional collaboration. By investing in local expertise now, we are ensuring more women have access to the life-changing treatment they deserve.

Big things are happening this week with the Zambia FFTN!

Starting today and running through Friday, we are proud to be supporting fistula repair surgeries for 60 women at Mbala General Hospital, UTH, and Chilenje Level One Hospital.

This is what teamwork looks like! Our incredible Zambian surgeons and nursesβ€”trained and mentored through our capacity building programsβ€”are in action, restoring health and futures for mothers across the country.

To the 60 women: We see you, we honor you, and we are with you every step of the way this week.

Investing in Skills, Restoring Dignity πŸ’™

At the Fistula Foundation Treatment Network in Zambia, we believe in the power of continuous learning. This week, we supported one of our talented surgeons Dr. Goshon Kasanda to travel to Maputo, Mozambique, for a specialized fistula repair training with Focus Fistula.

This training will enable surgeons conduct more complicated and complex operations in order to restore dignity and continence to women who suffer from severe childbirth injuries and whose private parts and bladder may have been severely damaged during childbirth.

Dr Kasanda says with this training almost all cases of fistula and childbirth injuries in Zambia will have surgical intervention to maintain urinary continence and also to retain their sexual activities which may have been affected by the damage they sustained during childbirth. He intends to extend this special surgical skills to other fistula surgeons in the country. He thanks fistula foundation and it’s donors for enabling him attend this special workshop which will benefit a lot of women and their families !

Just because the rivers are calm, it doesn't mean there are no crocodiles! So is the situation of obstetric fistula and neglected perennial tears! Women have continued to live in isolation and shame for fear of being stigmatized and shamed!
It takes a committed awareness creation and mobilization team to find these women in communities.
A team that walks the paths others don't. They listen for the stories spoken in whispers. They are our Mobilization Team of excellence, and they have just achieved something extraordinary.
With unwavering dedication, from January to date, they have brought 70 women living with fistula and neglected perennial tears out of isolation and onto the path to healing. 70 women who now have a name, a story, and a chance at renewed dignity and life.

This number is more than a targetβ€”it's 70 revolutions of hope. Every single one represents a bridge built over a chasm of despair.

To our relentless field team: You are the finders. You are the first responders of hope. We are in awe of your compassion, resilience, and flat-out hard work. The journey to healing begins with YOU.
Surgery mode activatedπŸ‘Œ
Tomorrow to Sunday the first batch will undergo surgery from Chilenje level one and Kabwe General Hospitals.
