Dear parents and Donors
Zambia is currently implementing major reforms to its school curriculum through a Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC). The new system focuses on practical skills, critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving rather than rote memorization.
The education structure has been revised, subjects have been reorganized, and assessments now emphasize continuous learning outcomes. The curriculum also integrates emerging issues such as digital literacy, entrepreneurship, climate change, and civic education.
The rollout is being done gradually, starting with Early Childhood Education, Grade One, and Form One, and progressing each year. While the reforms aim to align education with national development goals and job-ready skills, challenges remain, including teacher training and availability of learning materials, especially in rural areas
For parents, it means learning may look different from the past—more practical activities, projects, and continuous assessment. Parental support at home, encouragement, and engagement with schools are now more important than ever.
For donors and supporters, the reforms highlight a strong need for continued support in areas such as teacher training, learning materials, digital tools, libraries, and safe learning spaces, especially in underserved communities. Investments made now will have long-term impact by helping children gain relevant skills and confidence to contribute positively to society and national development.
