On the 18th of July, 2025 we visited Olympia Park Secondary School as part of our project called Zero Charcoal Ambassador.
We had an interesting session with our ambassadors(pupils) and our key messages to them included;
1: The Hidden Costs of Charcoal: Understanding the Environmental Impact
Focus:
We highlighted the severe environmental consequences of charcoal production and consumption.How charcoal production is a primary driver of deforestation in Zambia, leading to habitat loss, soil erosion, and desertification.
(a). We discussed the release of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane) from burning charcoal, contributing to global warming and climate change.
(b). Illustrated how deforestation impacts biodiversity, leading to the extinction of plant and animal species.
(c). Air Pollution and Health: Indoor air pollution caused by charcoal smoke and its detrimental effects on human health (respiratory illnesses, eye problems).
(d) Further more we explained how deforestation affects water cycles, leading to reduced rainfall and water scarcity.
The second topic we discussed was titled
" Beyond the Smoke: Exploring Sustainable Energy Alternatives
Focus"
Under this topic we introduced and explained viable, sustainable alternatives to charcoal for cooking and energy needs which included;
Solar Energy, Biogas,
LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and briquetting (briquettes)
We concluded our session with a call to action for our Ambassadors which we titled
"Youth for Change: Our Role in the Zero Charcoal Campaign,"
We empowered our ambassador (students) by outlining their crucial role in promoting the Zero Charcoal Campaign and environmental conservation. The message included;
Advocacy and Awareness, Community Engagement, Innovation and Creativity, Leading by Example and Forming Environmental Club in their Schools.
We thank the School management for collaborating with us and supporting our calls to appoint more ambassadors to represent and protect our environment.
