𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲

The School Health Programme has reached another major milestone.

Medicines and medical supplies for School Health Rooms will now be supplied through the Ministry of Health's routine supply chain, with public health facilities supporting schools directly.

For years, Healthy Learners supported the procurement of medicines to ensure learners could access care at school. With the Government now taking on this responsibility, the programme is becoming increasingly embedded within Zambia's public health system, exactly the direction sustainable programmes should take.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗱.

Learners will continue receiving essential health services through a Government-owned system, while Healthy Learners can redirect resources previously spent on medicines towards expanding the School Health Programme to more schools, more districts, and more children.

Every successful programme should aim to make itself less indispensable over time by strengthening the systems that will carry the work forward. Today's milestone brings the School Health Programme another step closer to that future.

We're grateful to the Government of Zambia and our partners, both here at home and across the world, whose continued investment has helped make this transition possible.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸: 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🇿🇲

As we reflect on this year's Africa Public Service Day celebrations, we celebrate the School Health Teachers who bring the government school health programme to life in schools across Zambia.

Under the theme, "Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063," the programme demonstrated how teachers are strengthening public service by promoting healthy behaviours, improving sanitation and hygiene practices, and ensuring learners can access basic health services where they learn.

It was an honour to showcase this work at the national celebrations and exhibitions at East Park Mall, where the programme also welcomed Her Honour the Vice President to the exhibition stand during the official opening.

To every School Health Teacher: 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲.

On 15 June, Healthy Learners joined the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to commission 𝟭𝟳 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗽𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁, increasing the total to 80 across Muchinga Province.

Every new health room strengthens the School Health Programme by giving trained School Health Teachers the space and tools to deliver health services where learners need them most.

As Healthy Learners, we remain committed to expanding the School Health Programme to more schools and more districts across Zambia. This progress is only possible because of the continued partnership and investment of government, communities, and our partners in Zambia and around the world, who share our vision of ensuring every child can access quality health services at school.

Together, we're building a future where no learner is left behind because of a treatable health condition.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Earlier this year, the School Health Programme was allocated funding in Zambia's National Budget for 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

Today, we're seeing that investment translate into action.

The Ministry of Health has begun using these funds to train School Health Teachers, with the training done in North-Western Province and preparations progressing in Eastern Province. The government is leading the implementation, coordinating the trainings, and investing its own resources to strengthen the School Health Programme.

For Healthy Learners, this is an encouraging milestone. A budget allocation only delivers impact when it is put to work, and it's exciting to see the Government investing in the people who make the School Health Programme possible.

As more School Health Teachers are trained, more learners will be able to access quality health services in their schools.

We're proud to continue supporting the Government as the School Health Programme becomes increasingly institutionalised, sustainable, and positioned for continued growth.
