A New Beginning Through Sewing

Age should never be a barrier to learning, opportunity, or independence.

Meet a remarkable Deaf woman name Mary who is taking a courageous step toward building a better future for herself. With determination in her heart and a willingness to learn, she is learning how to use a sewing machine so she can develop a skill that will help her earn an income and continue living independently.

The Sign Language Channel of Zambia (SLCZ) is supporting her journey by helping her find a sewing machine, materials and connecting her with an instructor who can teach her the skills she needs.

Did you know that Deafness is not the same for every person with a hearing impairment? There are actually different levels of hearing loss. While some individuals are profoundly deaf, others have partial hearing loss and can be helped with the right assistance and technology—just like Daniel. Thanks to an incredible collaboration, Daniel’s world just got a whole lot brighter with the use of hearing aids. A massive heartfelt thank you goes out to the amazing team at Starkey Hearing Foundation. Their dedication, kindness, and professionalism made this entire process seamless. It's inspiring to see British Sign Language continuing to grow, with new signs being developed to make marine science more accessible to the Deaf community.

A young Deaf girl with other disabilities is receiving support in school from one of SLCZ instructors’ who truly understands her journey — a Deaf young woman who once stood in her shoes. She is gaining confidence as she learns Zambian sign language using visual aids and supportive teaching strategies.

Thanks to the dedication of SLCZ supporting Deaf people in Zambia, lives are being transformed. This is more than assistance; it’s empowerment. The cycle of support continues as those who once received help now give back, creating a community of strength, resilience, and hope.
