CTDT is currently conducting a Sustainable Organic Agriculture Training for 24 farmers at KATC. The training is designed to develop a new cohort of Farmer Facilitators (Training of Trainers – ToTs) who will champion the Whole Farm Approach in their communities.

The participants, drawn from Chikankata, Shibuyunji, and Chirundu districts, are being equipped with practical knowledge and skills to become model farmers. Upon completion of the training, they will establish demonstration plots and train fellow farmers, enabling the wider adoption of sustainable farming practices.

The Whole Farm Approach seeks to improve farm productivity while enhancing household incomes, food security, and climate resilience. Through farmer-to-farmer learning, the initiative will support communities in building more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.

CTDT participated in the 4th Pan-African Seed Governance Conference, held in N'Djamena from 2nd to 4th June 2026.

The conference brought together civil society organizations, farmer groups, policymakers, and seed sovereignty advocates from across Africa to strengthen the capacity of African civil society and farmers' organizations to influence the domestication of the Continental farmer managed seed systems (FMSS) Strategy. Discussions also focused on increasing awareness of the opportunities and challenges that digitalization presents for food sovereignty on the African continent.

CTDT's participation provided an important platform to share experiences, learn from regional partners, and contribute to collective efforts aimed at promoting farmer-managed seed systems, protecting agrobiodiversity, and advancing resilient and sustainable food systems across Africa.

Through support from CTDT and funding from the NCA under the LIFT Zambia Project, the Lukwipa community now has access to an upgraded borehole equipped with a pump at Lukwipa Market.

The District Water Department Engineer and the Senior Headwoman of Lukwipa recently visited the site to assess the flow of water following the successful completion of this important community water facility.

The upgraded borehole is already providing households with access to safe and clean water, helping to improve Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in the community.

In addition, the facility will support farmers' off-season production through irrigation.

The impact is already being felt, as community members benefit from reliable access to clean water for domestic use while farmers prepare to utilize the facility for irrigation purposes.

World Environment Day 2026

CTDT in collaboration with Rufunsa town Council in Rufunsa District joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

The commemoration served as a reminder that nature is at the heart of our livelihoods, food systems, and overall wellbeing. As communities continue to experience the impacts of climate change through erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and declining soil fertility, the need to protect and restore our environment has never been greater.

Rufunsa Town Council Secretary who officiated the event called on all stakeholders to take an active role in environmental conservation and climate action, emphasizing that protecting the environment is essential for sustainable development and the future of coming generations.

The event also highlighted the importance of agroecology and biodiversity as practical solutions to climate challenges. By promoting crop diversity, conserving indigenous seeds, improving soil health, and encouraging sustainable land use practices, communities can build resilience while safeguarding natural resources.

Happy World Biodiversity Day!

22nd May marks the commemoration World Biodiversity Day. This year's theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” celebrates the rich diversity of life that sustains our planet, from forests and rivers to seeds, soils, insects, wildlife, and traditional knowledge within our communities.

Biodiversity is the foundation of food systems, health, livelihoods, and climate resilience. Yet, it continues to face growing threats from climate change, deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable practices. Protecting biodiversity begins with the choices we make every day.

This International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us that even the smallest local actions matter. Planting indigenous trees, preserving traditional seed varieties, practicing sustainable agriculture, protecting water sources, and educating future generations all contribute to a healthier planet.

Together, we can halt and reverse biodiversity loss creating stronger ecosystems and a more sustainable future for all.

Pupils at Katope School are actively preparing sunken beds for organic vegetable production as part of our Agroecology (AE) school gardens in Rufunsa District. The learners are planting a variety of traditional vegetables while gaining hands on knowledge in sustainable farming and nutrition.

By promoting Agroecology and nutrition in schools, we are empowering young people with practical skills for healthier communities and a more sustainable future.

CTDT alongside partners co-hosted the 1st National Food Systems Transformation Dialogue for 2026 held in Shibuyunji and Mumbwa Districts under the theme “Building Healthy, Eco-Friendly and Resilient Food Systems.”

The dialogue brought together farmers, traditional leaders, government officials and civil society organizations (CSOs) to share practical solutions for transforming Zambia’s food systems through agroecology, biodiversity conservation, indigenous knowledge, and nutrition-sensitive agriculture.

Participants also engaged in field learning visits showcasing community-led initiatives including the community seed banks and local food processing, highlighting how communities are strengthening resilience while preserving indigenous seeds and improving household nutrition.
