World Soil Day in Chilanga

CTDT is excited to be taking part in World Soil Day, currently underway in Chilanga, under the theme “Healthy Soil for Healthy Cities.”

We’re showcasing our ongoing work in agroecology, promoting sustainable farming practices that rebuild soil health and protect biodiversity.

We are also highlighting the importance of local seed diversity demonstrating how farmer-led seed systems help strengthen climate resilience and ensure communities have access to nutritious and healthy, locally sourced foods.

Healthy soils are at the heart of healthy cities and we’re proud to stand with farmers, partners, and stakeholders to promote solutions that protect our soils and secure our food systems.

We are currently conducting a two-day training on Farmers’ Rights for farmers and camp extension officers.

The training which started yesterday and concludes today focuses on understanding what Farmers’ Rights are and why they are vital for ensuring equitable and sustainable agricultural development. Participants are exploring key topics such as:

- The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA)

- The UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP)

- The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

- Current seed laws in Zambia

- Registration of farmer varieties

Through these sessions, participants are gaining insights into how these frameworks protect farmers’ knowledge, promote fair access to resources, and encourage the conservation and use of local crop diversity.

Strengthening Voices for Farmer-Led Seed Systems

CTDT is currently participating in the Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR) Bill meeting with the House of Chiefs, taking place from 11–12 November.

Farmers are engaging directly with traditional leaders, sharing powerful stories about their work preserving and improving farmer-led seed systems and why local seed remains a vital issue for community resilience, food sovereignty, and cultural identity.

Chiefs are actively listening and interacting with farmers, emphasizing the importance of protecting farmers’ rights and ensuring that any seed legislation reflects the realities and needs of local communities.

Local seed is not just about farming it’s about identity, resilience, and the right to choose.

CTDT remains committed to amplifying farmer voices and fostering collaboration between policymakers, traditional leaders, and farming communities to build fair, inclusive, and sustainable seed systems .
