HIGHLIGHTS OF THE RUFUNSA SEED AND FOOD FAIR!

Today, farmers, community members and stakeholders gathered at the Rufunsa Community Seed Bank for the Seed and Food Fair, a celebration of local seeds, food diversity and farmer knowledge.

The day featured visits to exhibition stands, food tasting, and seed sharing among farmers, creating space for learning and exchange on the importance of preserving local seed varieties and strengthening Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS).

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of a farmers' communiquรฉ to the District Commissioner. Through the communiquรฉ, farmers raised concerns over the lack of policy support for FMSS and the continued use of banned pesticides in agricultural production, calling for greater recognition and protection of farmer-led seed systems and safer, more sustainable farming practices.

Today has been a day of celebratinfg our rich cultures!

CTDT joined the Ila and Lundwe people of Nalubamba Chiefdom in Namwala District for the main day of the Ikubi Lya BanaMunyati Traditional Ceremony.

The ceremony brought together community members to celebrate their culture through traditional songs, dances and storytelling, while also reflecting on issues affecting the community, including livelihoods, health and the environment.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, CTDT conducted agroecology trainings with farmers in Namwala and distributed foundation seed to support local seed production and strengthen farmer-managed seed systems.

The ceremony was a reminder that culture and agriculture go hand in hand. The seeds, foods and knowledge passed down from generation to generation are an important part of preserving community identity and building resilience in the face of climate change.

CTDT AT THE SKI GATHERING AND THE HARARE GOOD SEED AND FOOD FESTIVAL

CTDT was honoured to participate in the SKI Advocacy Meeting and the Harare Good Seed and Food Festival, a vibrant gathering that brought together farmers, youth champions, partners, researchers and advocates committed to strengthening farmer-managed seed systems and advancing Farmersโ€™ Rights.

Throughout the week, we shared powerful seed stories, exchanged knowledge and experiences, identified policy gaps, and collectively explored solutions for safeguarding seed diversity. The discussions reaffirmed that seed is far more than a farming input, it is a carrier of culture, identity, indigenous knowledge, history and hope for future generations.

We are proud to have contributed to the development of the Regional and Farmersโ€™ Rights Statement, ensuring that farmersโ€™ voices remain at the centre of decisions that affect their seeds, livelihoods and food systems.

As we return home, we carry with us new knowledge, stronger solidarity and renewed determination to protect and promote traditional seeds and agroecology. In the words echoed throughout the festival;

"DO NOT LET THE SEED GO TO SLEEP."

Let us keep our seeds safe, keep our stories alive, and continue growing resilient food systems for generations to come.

CTDT was honoured to participate in the Chibwela Kumushi Traditional Ceremony of the Soli People under Chieftainess Mphanshya in Rufunsa District, a vibrant celebration that marks the community's return from the harvest season and gives thanks for the food produced from the land.

As communities gather to celebrate this important cultural event, we are reminded that traditional seeds are at the heart of our heritage, food systems, and resilience. For generations, farming families have carefully selected, saved, exchanged and preserved local seed varieties that are well adapted to local conditions, withstand climate challenges, and provide diverse and nutritious food.

Traditional ceremonies such as Chibwela Kumushi play a vital role in preserving indigenous knowledge and strengthening community appreciation for the seeds, crops and farming practices passed down through generations. As climate change continues to affect agricultural production, protecting and promoting farmer-managed seed systems and traditional seed varieties is more important than ever.

Our traditional seeds are more than planting material they are our culture, our identity, and our hope for a resilient future.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEED AND FOOD FAIR - SHIBUYUNJI

More than a showcase of seeds and food, the past two days have been a powerful moment for farmers' voices to be heard.

Following a day of dialogue and reflection, farmers from across Shibuyunji presented a communiquรฉ outlining their key concerns, priorities, and recommendations for strengthening agriculture, protecting farmers' rights, improving access to seed, and building resilience to climate change. The communiquรฉ was formally handed over to tye District Commissioner, ensuring that the experiences and aspirations of farmers remain at the centre of agricultural development.

Alongside this important milestone, the Seed and Food Fair celebrated the diversity of local seeds, traditional foods, and the knowledge that farming communities have nurtured for generations. Farmers exchanged seed, shared innovations, and demonstrated the critical role that farmer-managed seed systems play in safeguarding food security and agricultural biodiversity.

After last week's Training of Trainers, farmers are now sitting together to discuss what climate change is actually looking like in their communities and what can be done about it. From changing rainfall patterns to longer dry spells, these experiences are helping shape a Climate Change Adaptation Plan that reflects local realities and priorities.

The best solutions often come from the people living through the challenges every day. It has been encouraging to hear farmers share their experiences, ideas, and practical ways of adapting to a changing climate.

CTDT in collaboration with the Zambia Meteorological Department, commenced a two-day Training of Trainers on climate change adaptation, mitigation and early warning systems. The training has brought together participants to deepen their understanding of climate change, climate risks affecting smallholder farmers, and practical adaptation and mitigation strategies that can strengthen community resilience.

Through interactive discussions and group work, participants are sharing experiences from their communities, identifying climate hazards, and exploring locally led solutions that can help farmers adapt to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Tomorrow's sessions will focus on climate information services, early warning systems, and how communities can better prepare for droughts, floods, pests, diseases and other climate-related shocks.

GENDER TRAINING IN RUFUNSA

CTDT in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare, is conducting a Gender Training bringing together women and men to discuss gender roles, shared responsibilities, and the importance of inclusive participation in their communities.
