Zambian Delegation at SARSYC VI

We are proud to have Margaret Ngonga, Communications and Advocacy Coordinator at CARE Zambia, joining the Zambian delegation at the Southern African Regional Students and Youth Consortium VI in Namibia.

Margaret will be presenting a research poster titled The Role of Communication in Mitigating Sexual Health Risks Among Adolescent Girls in Climate-Stressed Communities of Chibombo District, Zambia.

Her work highlights the critical role of strategic communication in addressing the intersection of climate change, sexual and reproductive health, and the well-being of adolescent girls. By exploring innovative, youth-centered communication approaches, her research contributes to building more resilient and healthier communities.

We wish Margaret every success as she showcases her work and represents Zambia on the regional stage.

Congratulations to Anthony Bwalya on winning 3rd Best Abstract Presentation at SARSYC VI!

Anthony, a student at Northern Technical College (NORTEC), presented an insightful study titled “A New Digital Pandemic is Looming: Online Gambling," drawing attention to one of the fastest-growing yet often overlooked threats facing young people today.During the Research Indaba,

Anthony explored how online gambling is increasingly affecting young people’s financial health, well-being, and future. His presentation, “Leveraging Digital Technology to Address Online Gambling Risks and Promote Youth Financial Health,” unpacked how gambling platforms often hook young people through the excitement of an initial win, creating a powerful cycle where early success fuels the belief that another win is always just around the corner.

His research reminds us that online gambling is not simply about individual choices. It is also about the digital environments young people navigate, the advertising they are exposed to, the safeguards that exist, and whether our health and social systems are prepared to respond to gambling-related harm.As gambling increasingly shifts online, our responses must evolve too.

Prevention strategies, regulation, digital literacy, financial education, and youth-friendly support services must keep pace. Young people deserve digital spaces that protect their hopes, aspirations, and well-being, not platforms that profit from their vulnerabilities.Congratulations once again, Anthony, on this well-deserved recognition and for contributing important evidence to this growing public health conversation.

Opening the 3rd edition of the Research Indaba, SARSYC Convener Mr Jimmy Wilford underscored the critical role of youth-led research in shaping policies, programmes and decisions that respond to the realities young people face.

He reflected on the uncomfortable realities that have driven the Research Indaba, situations where policies were developed for young people, yet often failed to adequately address the issues affecting their everyday lives. But when young people are given a meaningful platform to research, speak and lead, they do more than identify problems; they generate evidence, challenge assumptions and develop solutions grounded in their lived realities.

The message from the Research Indaba is clear: young people are not merely beneficiaries of policy; they are researchers, knowledge producers and solution-makers who must be at the centre of evidence-informed decision-making.
As the Research Indaba gets underway, the call is to move from evidence to influence, from influence to policy, and from policy to meaningful change.

Zambian Delegation at SARSYC IV

Meet Mr. Clive Kalambo, a parliamentary research officer and public policy analyst at the National Assembly of Zambia, with over 10 years of experience in parliamentary engagement and legislative support. He serves as the Desk Officer for the Zambia Youth Parliamentary Caucus (ZYPC), where he coordinates parliamentary engagement on youth-related issues and works to strengthen youth participation in governance and policymaking.

At SARSYC IV, Mr. Kalambo will participate in the panel discussion on “Age of Consent and Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).” Drawing on the Zambian experience, he will share insights on how youth organisations and other stakeholders can effectively engage members of Parliament through established parliamentary platforms to advance advocacy, policy dialogue, and legislative reform.
