PAN Zambia was recently part of the event to launch the National Policy on Legal Aid. The National Coordinator spoke about the role of CSOs in providing legal aid in communities in line with the 2026 policy.

We are happy to have been part of the access to justice team (CCCI) which visited Chilanga Police Station and Linda Police post to check on detainees who are criminal suspects. Our discussion with the officers focused on the welfare of those in detention ensuring that their rights are respected and also understanding the challenges officers face in the course of their duties. We will continue to promote the rights of those who come in conflict with the law for better access to justice.

ZAFOD Calls for Urgent Action to Strengthen Disability Inclusion in Poll Staff
Recruitment

The Zambia Federation of Disability Organisations (ZAFOD) has noted with concern reports
from across the country indicating that qualified persons with disabilities have not been
adequately considered in the ongoing recruitment of poll staff for the 2026 General Elections.

The participation of persons with disabilities in elections extends beyond voting and
candidature. It also includes the opportunity to serve as election officials and poll staff,
thereby contributing directly to the administration and credibility of Zambia's democratic
processes. Meaningful representation of persons with disabilities among poll staff enhances
accessibility, public confidence and the overall inclusiveness of elections.

The reported exclusion is inconsistent with Zambia's commitment to promoting equal
opportunities, affirmative action and the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities
in public affairs. It also undermines ongoing efforts by the Electoral Commission of Zambia
(ECZ) and other stakeholders to advance accessible and inclusive electoral processes.
These efforts have been documented through successive ZAFOD election observation missions,
which continue to identify disability inclusion as a fundamental pillar of credible elections.

Accordingly, ZAFOD respectfully calls upon the ECZ to urgently engage all District
Electoral Officers, HR coordinators and local authorities responsible for poll staff recruitment
and take immediate corrective measures to ensure that qualified persons with disabilities are
afforded equitable consideration before the recruitment process is concluded.
ZAFOD further calls upon local authorities implementing the recruitment process to uphold
the principles of equality, non-discrimination and affirmative action by ensuring that
disability is never a barrier to employment in electoral administration.

This appeal is not for preferential treatment. Rather, it is a call for equal opportunity for
qualified persons with disabilities to participate meaningfully in Zambia's electoral process,
consistent with national and international commitments to inclusion and accessible
democratic governance.
As Zambia prepares for the 2026 General Elections, ZAFOD remains committed to working
constructively with the ECZ, government, local authorities and all electoral stakeholders to
promote elections that are peaceful, credible, accessible and inclusive for all citizens.

PAN Zambia Unity Day Message: Transforming Division into Shared Progress

Fellow Zambians, Partners, and Champions of Peace, On this Unity Day, PAN Zambia invites every citizen to look beyond the historical definition of peace. True unity is not merely the absence of visible friction or political tension. It is the active, deliberate transformation of our structural, social, and economic differences into a sustainable foundation for national progress.

Our national motto, "One Zambia, One Nation," is not a static destination. It is a daily,
participatory process. In line with our Peace and Conflict Transformation Strategy , we recognize that societal tensions and diverse viewpoints are natural dynamics within our rich cultural tapestry. However, conflict becomes destructive only when we lack the institutional mechanisms and collective will to address its root causes.
To build a truly resilient Zambia, we must shift our focus from temporary conflict
management to deep-rooted transformation. This means:

Engaging in Grassroots Dialogue: Creating inclusive, safe spaces within our local
communities to address real grievances before they escalate.
Dismantling Structural Inequalities: Building transparent, fair systems that grant every Zambian, regardless of region, language, or political affiliation and equal access to opportunities.

Rejecting Divisive Rhetoric: Intentionally countering hate speech, political tribalism, and social polarisation with constructive, collaborative public discourse.
Unity is a shared public infrastructure. It requires the state, civil society, traditional leaders, and the youth to work hand in hand. Let us honour the legacy of our founding freedom fighters not through passive coexistence, but by actively co-creating a just, inclusive, and peaceful society.
This Unity Day, let us commit to the hard work of building bridges, listening to understand, and transforming our diversity into our greatest collective asset.
