BY-FCI is inviting professionals, entrepreneurs, business leaders and experienced individuals who are willing to share their knowledge, experience and networks with emerging young leaders and entrepreneurs.

Mentorship does not mean having all the answers. Sometimes it means sharing what you have learned, opening a door, challenging an idea, making a connection or helping someone avoid a mistake you once made.

MENTORSHIP MATTERS

Potential is important, but potential without direction can remain just potential.

Mentorship gives young people access to something experience has already taught someone else — guidance, perspective, knowledge and lessons learned along the way.

A good mentor does not simply tell a young person what to do. They can help them recognize their strengths, challenge their thinking, make informed decisions, avoid unnecessary mistakes and turn ideas into practical action.

At BY-FCI, mentorship is an important part of youth development because we want young people to move beyond simply having dreams and abilities. We want them to develop the clarity, confidence and capacity to act on them.

Sometimes a young person doesn't need another motivational speech.

THE PROBLEM: LACK OF DIRECTION

Sometimes, the problem isn't a lack of talent. It's not knowing what to do with it.

Many young people have ideas, abilities and ambition, but without the right mentorship, networks, exposure and opportunities, potential can remain undeveloped.

A talented young person may have a great business idea but no one to guide them. Another may have leadership potential but lack a platform to develop it. Someone else may have valuable skills but no network connecting them to opportunities.

This is why youth development must go beyond telling young people to “work hard” or “believe in themselves.” We must also build environments where they can learn, connect, be mentored, gain practical experience and access opportunities.

At BY-FCI, we want to help bridge that gap — creating platforms that enable young people to discover their potential and develop the capacity to turn it into meaningful action.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

Behind every generation of leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and professionals are teachers who helped shape the way they think, learn and see what is possible.

Teaching goes far beyond the classroom. Teachers help young people discover their abilities, build confidence, develop discipline and acquire the knowledge needed to participate meaningfully in society.

For BY-FCI, investing in young people also means recognising the people who educate, mentor and prepare them for the future.

Today, we celebrate teachers everywhere for the knowledge they share, the potential they nurture and the generations they help build.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS A TOOL

At BY-FCI, we promote entrepreneurship and innovation because we believe young people should be equipped to create opportunities, not only wait for them.

Entrepreneurship gives young people a practical way to turn skills, ideas and creativity into solutions that create economic value. Innovation encourages them to look at the challenges around them differently and ask: What can I build? What can I improve? What problem can I solve?

Our goal goes beyond encouraging young people to simply “start businesses.” We want to help develop competent, ethical and impact-driven entrepreneurs who understand how to build sustainable enterprises and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Through training, mentorship and practical opportunities, we want young people to move from ideas to action, and from action to sustainable impact.

Because when a young person builds a viable enterprise, the impact can extend beyond one individual — creating income, developing solutions and opening opportunities for others.

Don't just look for opportunity. Develop the capacity to create it.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP: AN UNDERSTATED SOLUTION

In Zambia, 60% of the population lived below the national poverty line in 2022. The challenge was particularly severe in rural areas, where the poverty rate stood at 78.8%.

These numbers point to something bigger than poverty alone: the need to expand economic opportunity.

Entrepreneurship is one important part of that solution.

When young people are equipped to identify problems, develop viable businesses and create value, they are not only looking for employment — they can begin creating income, enterprises and opportunities for others.

Entrepreneurship alone will not solve poverty. Young entrepreneurs also need practical skills, access to finance and markets, mentorship, supportive institutions and an economy in which businesses can grow. But enabling productive private-sector activity and better jobs is an important part of Zambia's pathway toward reducing poverty.

At BY-FCI, we believe we must increasingly ask:

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE

2 OCTOBER

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is the deliberate choice to resolve differences through dialogue, understanding and respect rather than violence.

The International Day of Non-Violence reminds us that lasting change does not always require aggression. Some of history’s most influential movements have demonstrated the power of peaceful action in confronting injustice and creating social change.

For young people, this message is especially important. Leadership means learning how to disagree without hatred, advocate without violence and pursue change without destroying the communities we want to improve.

At BY-FCI, we believe young people can become a powerful force for building communities where differences are addressed constructively and every person’s dignity is respected.

THE PROBLEM: POVERTY

Poverty is more than a lack of income. For many young people, it can mean limited access to opportunities that could change the direction of their lives.

When economic opportunities are scarce, young people may struggle to access quality education, develop relevant skills, start businesses, find meaningful work or build financial independence.

And when talent exists without opportunity, potential can remain untapped.

The effects can continue across families and communities — creating cycles where young people have ideas and ambition but lack the resources, networks, mentorship or platforms needed to move forward.

Addressing poverty therefore requires more than short-term assistance. We must also create pathways that enable young people to develop skills, participate in the economy, build enterprises, access opportunities and create sustainable livelihoods.

At BY-FCI, we believe empowering young people economically is an important part of building stronger communities and transforming generations.

Poverty may limit opportunity.
It should never define potential.
