[ Roots of Resilience: The Preservation of Traditional Seeds in Zambian Agriculture 🌽🌾 ]

What if the future of Zambia’s food security lies in the seeds we are slowly forgetting? As climate pressures grow, traditional crops may hold the resilience our farming systems urgently need. But are we doing enough to protect them?

[ CEJ at the Regional Resilience Dialogue on Nature Crimes 2026 ]

The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) participated in the Regional Resilience Dialogue on Nature Crimes held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 15th–16th April 2026. The dialogue was convened by The Resilience Fund in partnership with University of Nairobi, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders. CEJ was represented by the Head of Programmes, Mr Haggai Nyambe, who contributed to discussions and shared insights.

At the dialogue, CEJ delivered a presentation on “Strengthening Community Resilience Against Illegal Mining”, drawing from our work in Serenje District. The presentation highlighted how illegal manganese mining, driven by poverty and weak regulation, can be addressed through community-led solutions, including alternative livelihoods, social accountability mechanisms, and local monitoring systems. It also demonstrated how communities are transitioning from passive observers to active environmental defenders.

Key Takeaways from the Dialogue:
🔹 Evidence-Based Advocacy for Policy & Prosecution:
Effective advocacy must be grounded in credible evidence to influence policy reform and strengthen prosecution, ensuring nature crimes are treated as serious economic and organized crimes.

🔹 Personal Security & Evidence Protection:
Strengthening personal security and safeguarding evidence is critical to protect practitioners and ensure successful legal outcomes.

🔹 Community-Led Nature Protection:
Experiences from Green Belt Movement in protecting Karura Forest reaffirmed that empowered communities are central to sustainable environmental protection.

Our Reflection:
Nature crimes are not just environmental issues, they are linked to livelihoods, governance, and economic systems. Addressing them requires integrated, evidence-driven, and community-centered approaches.

CEJ remains committed to advancing environmental justice and community resilience across Zambia and beyond.
