THE FIRST PLAY FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR!

This weekend, we had our first play festival of the year at Bayuni Primary School in Chilanga. One hundred learners were divided into groups, rotating across 6 play stations, led by 24 trained teachers. The games played included:
- The Menstruation Cycle Relay
- Frustration Game
- Score
- Bad Habit Run
- Only Two
- Boy Girl Relay

"Once they get home, every child here will be very eager to tell the story of what games were played today and what things they learnt in the game discussion. I have a feeling that we will have filled-up classrooms on Monday."
- Chibola Simangaliso (Guidance and Counselling Teacher, Bayuni Primary School)

WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THE SCHOOL TERM BEING OPENED?

Knowing that 72 rural government teachers in the Join for Joy programme have been trained in playful learning, adding to over 352 teachers across 88 schools in Chilanga and Chongwe districts.

These teachers return to school motivated, energised and ready to use inclusive playful learning pedagogies to revise class subjects, to discuss menstrual hygiene practices, and, most importantly, to expose learners to diverse life skills and social themes. A wonderful mix of theory and practical applications ready to be duplicated in their various classes. These activities are already impacting over 40,000 children, and many more still in counting every year!

Have a look at some snaps from our training days in April!

MENSTRUAL HEALTH CLUBS ARE BACK IN SESSION!

With schools open again, already one thing is off the checklist: "Recap of the menstrual hygiene club ✅".

African Vision of Hope (AVOH) Primary School conducted its first menstrual health session this term, with both returning and newly joined girls in the club. Led by Coach Margaret, the session created a safe and interactive space where learners were introduced to menstrual health topics and the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene practices. Coach Maggie took time to introduce the purpose of the menstrual health club to the new girls, encouraging openness, confidence, and peer support among the girls.

This peer-to-peer learning approach continues to break myths and stigma surrounding menstruation while promoting healthy conversations about menstrual hygiene management in schools and communities.

Our weekend in review features school head teachers! 💪

Strengthening relationships with our implementing stakeholders is one of our priorities, and during the weekend we successfully had our "Head Teachers Day", attended by 40 head teachers representing 25 schools from Chilanga District and 15 from Chongwe District. This session also included representation from the Chilanga and Chongwe District Education Board Secretary Offices.

The results of this day included:
- School administrators were updated with Join for Joy's goals for this year.
- We collectively discussed key ways that school administrators will stay involved in the success of the playful learning journey.
- Discussed activities that will ensure schools stay capable of implementing playful learning in the long term and stay well equipped with steps that will promote and encourage sustainability.

We look forward to seeing what impact stories we will witness this year!
