CHAZ has 162 members’ health institutions representing 16 Catholic and Protestant denominations. The majority of these health institutions are which are based in rural areas. They comprise 34 Hospitals (

including 16 nurses and laboratory technologists Training Schools), 77 Health Centers, and 31 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). Together these members serve about 8 million people nationally. CHAZ Secretariat is based in Zambia’s Capital city of Lusaka. The Secretariat is the Technical wing of the Association whose role is Representation and Advocacy, Resource mobilization, provision of technical, administrative and logistical support to its member’s church health units providing both curative and preventive health services and implementing activities to mitigate diseases of public health concern such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis programmes. The Secretariat is headed by the Chief Executive Officer supported by a lean but strong management team. CHAZ envisions a Zambian Society where all people are healthy and live productive lives, to the glory God and in our mission, we are committed to serving the poor and underserved communities with holistic, quality and affordable health services, that reflect Christian values, while Meeting Stakeholders’ expectations. CHAZ works closely with the Government through a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Health (MOH) which commits Government to providing grants covering 75% of operational costs for Church Health Institutions (CHIs). The MoU also provides for the payment of salaries for professional and non-professional health workers and provision of essential medicines for CHIs. The CHAZ Pharmaceutical Warehouse complements the Government owned Medical Stores in the storage and distribution of essential medicines. CHAZ operations are guided by Zambia’s National Health Strategy, the 6 WHO Health Systems building blocks, and CHAZ’s own Strategic Framework which has three (3) key Strategic Directions outlined below:
Direction 1: Health service delivery
Direction 2: Resilient health systems
Direction 3: Health Care Financing

Over the years CHAZ has cultivated much donor confidence and proved to be a good steward going by the number of partners the Association has attracted over the years. CHAZ emphasizes on transparency and accountability in the implementation of its programmes and has successfully managed a grant value of US$224m in the last seven years. The following are some of CHAZ’s valued partners: the government of the Republic of Zambia /Ministry of Health, Global Fund (GF), PEPFAR/Centre for Disease Control and Prevention , AIDSRelief /PEPFAR, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN), Danish Embassy, European Union, Irish Aid (IA), CORDAID, Joint Country Program (DCA/NCA/CA), UNICEF, Zambia Prevention and Care Treatment II, Fredskorpset (FK), Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN), Save the Children, Clinton Foundation, the Japanese Embassy, and Biet Trust. Through the course of our work, the following are some of our notable achievements; 80% Tuberculosis cure rate, 44,599 people living with HIV and AIDS(PLWHA) placed on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART), 92% HIV infection averted through PMTCT Programme, 52,809 orphan and vulnerable children (OVC) supported, 47,897 PLWHA) reached through home base care, 233,978 Insecticide Treated Nets for prevention of malaria distributed. However, demand outstrips resources available (inadequate human resource for health, financial, supplies), long distances especially in rural areas, Most mission ,hospitals old and dilapidated, inadequate transport for both Secretariat and CHIs, Inadequate office space at the Secretariat and limited room for expansion at the crowded location in city Centre, inadequate support for sustainability initiatives

Every community deserves access to quality healthcare, medicines, and health technologies regardless of how remote or underserved it may be.
Yet across Africa, many health systems continue to face challenges that affect their ability to consistently reach the people who need care most. Building stronger, more sustainable, and resilient systems is therefore not just a priority, it is a necessity.

This is the focus of the 10th under the theme: "Sustainable and Resilient Health Systems for Last-Mile Access in Africa."
From 5–9 October 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia, health leaders, policymakers, researchers, pharmaceutical professionals, manufacturers, development partners, and faith-based organizations will come together to share experiences, explore solutions, and strengthen partnerships that can help transform healthcare across the continent.
When health systems are resilient, communities are healthier, healthcare is more equitable, and no one is left behind.

CHAZ Celebrates African Freedom Day.

LUSAKA, 22nd May 2026 – The Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) celebrated African Freedom Day during the Friday morning devotion held today with the Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Karen Sichali-Sichinga, senior management, and staff reflecting on its importance.

Mr Sam Kapembwa offered a brief reflection, emphasising the day’s meaning for Zambia and Africa as a whole. Observed on May 25, African Freedom Day carries profound significance for Zambia as it honours both the continent’s collective liberation from colonialism and Zambia’s own independence journey. It is a day of remembrance, pride, and renewed commitment to unity and development.

Formerly Northern Rhodesia, Zambia was under British colonial rule until 1964, and the day symbolises the sacrifices made to break free from that system. Zambia’s independence was part of a broader wave of African nations gaining freedom, inspired by the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. Key figures in Zambia’s liberation included Kenneth Kaunda, the founding father and leader of the United National Independence Party (UNIP), who became the country’s first president and promoted the philosophy of “One Zambia, One Nation.”

Harry Nkumbula, leader of the African National Congress (ANC), was an early nationalist who laid the groundwork for political mobilization, while Simon Kapwepwe, a close ally of Kaunda, played a vital role in organizing resistance and later served as Vice President, championing cultural identity and independence. Mainza Chona contributed significantly through constitutional negotiations, and countless unnamed freedom fighters’ activists, workers, and students protested, organized strikes, and endured imprisonment to advance the cause of independence.

Today, African Freedom Day reminds Zambians of the importance of solidarity across ethnic and political divides, emphasizes youth empowerment as the next generation carries forward the vision of freedom, and highlights Zambia’s ongoing role in continental initiatives for peace, integration, and sustainable development. Ultimately, the day is not only about looking back but also about honoring Zambia’s heroes, celebrating independence, and recommitting to Africa’s shared destiny of peace and progress

CHAZ Condolence Message

LUSAKA, 19th May 2026 – The Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Karen Sichali-Sichinga led a team of senior management to the Cathedral of the Child Jesus to offer condolences to the Catholic Church and the family of Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu and signed in the book of condolences in honour of the Archbishop.

The CEO described the late Emeritus Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu as a voice of the voiceless who firmly advocated for a fair and just society where everyone had access to health.
Speaking to the Lusaka Archdiocese Vicar General, Fr. Andrew Simpasa, at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus, Mrs. Sichinga thanked God for the Gift of Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu.

"He was a devoted servant of God and a steadfast supporter of CHAZ and the Zambian health sector. He was not afraid to speak truth to power and side with the poor and vulnerable even when others would have chosen dignified silence. In this respect He was truly a Voice for the Voiceless,” said Mrs. Sichinga.

Archbishop Mpundu consistently championed the expansion of healthcare to underserved communities, reinforcing CHAZ’s mission of reaching the most vulnerable members of society. He was instrumental in mobilizing the Catholic Church’s involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment initiatives.

Through his Advocacy and Leadership, Archbishop Mpundu ensured that Church Health Facilities received resources which reflected the level of effort they put into health service provision. He was a strong voice in promoting equity in healthcare financing and governance, reminding stakeholders that healthcare delivery was not only a service but a moral obligation rooted in Christian calling, compassion and justice.

Archbishop Mpundu will be remembered as a visionary leader whose courage and passion for service strengthened CHAZ’s confidence to demand a just and equitable health sector where resources for health were allocated based on work rather than affiliation. He was a champion of increasing governments responsibility for the health of Zambians.

His dedication ensured that CHAZ programs reached communities across the country, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless Zambians. His legacy lives on in the continued work of CHAZ facilities, which embody the vision of accessible, quality healthcare for all.

In Response the Vicar General, on behalf of the Lusaka Archdiocese Archbishop Alick Banda, thanked CHAZ for the gesture. He prayed for the relationship between the Catholic Church and CHAZ to be preserved as the partnership continues to respond to the needs of the poor.

Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Karen Sichali-Sichinga, says a motivated health workforce is crucial to Zambia’s attainment of Universal Health Coverage. Mrs. Sichinga said this during the launch of the Zambia Health Labour Market Analysis Report on Wednesday, 13 May 2026 at Mulungushi International Conference Centre. The report was launched by Ministry of Health Zambia Permanent Secretary for Administration, Mrs. Joma Simuyi on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Alex Katakwe.

Mrs. Sichinga stressed that a health system was only as strong as its health workforce. “No matter how many hospitals we build, no matter how many policies we write, no matter how many medical supplies we procure, without a motivated, equitably distributed, and adequately supported workforce, the promise of Universal Health Coverage will remain only a promise,” she said.

CHAZ is the Lead NGO for Civil Society Organisations working in the health sector in Zambia and collaborates very well with the Ministry of Health in the delivery of health services in the country.
