Orbis Zambia joined Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital in commemorating World Sight Day under the theme “Love Your Eyes: The Power of People,” highlighting the importance of prioritising eye health and ensuring access to quality eye care for everyone.

The event was graced by Kitwe District Commissioner, Mr Oncemore Ng’onomo, alongside Kitwe Town Clerk Mr Patrick Kambita, Copperbelt Provincial Health Director Dr Charles Mwinuna, health facility leaders, cooperating partners and other government representatives.

Speaking at the commemoration, Orbis Clinical Advisor Dr Serenje Mulubwa emphasised “The Power of People” in achieving quality eye care, noting that everyone has a role to play, from patients and communities to community health workers, healthcare professionals, policymakers and implementers. Working together is key to ensuring that everyone can access quality eye health services.

Together, we can make eye health a shared responsibility and help more people enjoy a brighter future.

Love Your Eyes – The Power of People
Orbis Zambia joined the Ministry of Health and eye health partners to commemorate World Sight Day 2026 under the theme “Love Your Eyes – The Power of People.” The commemoration, hosted at the Ministry of Health Headquarters, began with a vibrant march and brought together stakeholders united by a shared commitment to improving eye health in Zambia.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health Prof. Roma Chilengi emphasised the importance of eye health to national development:
“A nation cannot fully develop if preventable or treatable loss of vision continues to limit the potential of its people.”

He further emphasised that eye health must not be treated as a privilege for a few, but as an essential public service that supports education, productivity, inclusion and quality of life. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening eye health within the wider health system, improving referrals and public awareness, and ensuring eye health remains part of national health priorities.

Orbis Zambia Country Director Ms Lucia Mvula reaffirmed Orbis’ commitment to supporting Government priorities by strengthening the eye health workforce, expanding access to services, supporting community awareness and referral, and building sustainable eye health systems.

Love Your Eyes is a call to action for all of us. Together, we can bring eye care closer to communities and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to see, learn, work and live to their full potential.

Last week, Ndola Teaching Hospital became a hub for specialist learning as the Oculoplastic Hospital-Based Training brought together international expertise and local talent to strengthen advanced eye-care services in Zambia.

The hands-on training brought together internationally recognised Volunteer Faculty Dr. Suzanne Freitag, Ophthalmologist and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Specialist from Harvard University and Dr. Lawrence Francis Avazedo, Anaesthesiologist from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, to mentor Zambian specialists in advanced oculoplastic surgery.

Through intensive surgical coaching, mentorship and practical learning, Dr. Mable Chansa (Ndola Teaching Hospital) and Dr. Felida Mwacalimba (Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital) strengthened their skills in delivering specialised care for patients with complex eyelid, orbital and tear duct conditions.

By investing in local specialists through hospital-based training, Orbis Zambia, through the Ministry of Health is helping build lasting clinical expertise within the country's health system, ensuring more patients can access high-quality specialised eye care closer to home while reducing the need for referrals abroad.

Together, we are strengthening Zambia's eye health workforce and bringing the future of specialised eye care into sharper focus.
