From a once-drying river to a source of renewed life, our visit to Nsongwe Community Village in Livingstone showed the lasting impact of the CAPA initiative. Even after the rains, water continues to flow through the check dams, a strong symbol of resilience in the face of climate change.

By slowing runoff and allowing water to seep into the ground, these 11 check dams are restoring moisture, reducing erosion, and creating more reliable water sources. This simple, nature-based solution is helping bring the river and the surrounding ecosystem back to life.

Today, community members are growing vegetable gardens, improving nutrition, and earning income. It’s a powerful reminder that when communities are supported with sustainable solutions, real change happens.

Our recent visit to Nsongwe Community Village in Livingstone revealed inspiring progress from the recently concluded Climate Adaptation in Protected Areas (CAPA) initiative. Due to the impacts of climate change, the once-permanent Nsongwe river had dried up, transforming into a seasonal water source.

A total of 11 check dams were initially constructed along the Nsongwe River, and from the last visit, we’re excited to share that water is still flowing through them a powerful sign of -resilience and sustainability in action.

the construction of the Check dams slows down water runoff, allowing it to collect, seep into the ground, and recharge the soil and surrounding vegetation. This helps retain moisture long after the rainy season, prevents erosion, and creates conditions for more reliable water availability.

Because of this, community members along the Nsongwe River are now able to establish and maintain vegetable gardens, improving household nutrition and creating opportunities for additional income.

This progress highlights the real impact of nature-based solutions in strengthening livelihoods and building climate resilience at the community level.

We are proud to work alongside our partners Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) to support communities like the Nsongwe community.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS!

The Kavango Zambezi Trans Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) Secretariat invites applications to support the Pilot Bankable Nature Solutions (BNS) Projects under the KAZA TFCA initiative.

The objective of this call is to identify and support pilot nature-based enterprises capable of transitioning into structured, bankable businesses that:
• generate sustainable revenues,
• create employment opportunities (with attention to women and youth),
• attract follow-on investment, and
• deliver measurable conservation outcomes.

Through this initiative, a select number of BNS projects implemented within the KAZA TFCA components of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe will receive financial support and technical assistance to showcase viable business models, test scalable financing mechanisms capable of attracting private capital, and strengthen nature-based enterprises that generate commercial returns while directly advancing conservation and livelihood outcomes across the KAZA landscape.

Application deadline: 12th June, 2026.

! is honoured to support the launch of two transformative GEF‑8 initiatives for the Kafue Flats:
▪️ KAF‑ADAPT – Kafue Flats Climate Resilience and Adaptation Project
▪️ KAF‑WILD – Kafue Flats Wildlife, Habitat, Health and Livelihoods Project

These projects represent a major step forward in strengthening climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and community empowerment across the Kafue Flats landscape.

Through strong collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Zambia, with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and with WWF as the implementing agency working alongside the International Crane Foundation (ICF) as the executing agency, WWF remains committed to restoring and sustainably managing the Kafue Flats under the vision of a “Wetland for All.”

Together, we can build resilient communities, protect vital ecosystems, and create lasting impact for both people and nature.

The WWF delegation was led by Country Director Nalucha Nganga‑Ziba.

The Kafue Flats support communities in Namwala, Monze, Mazabuka, Shibuyunji, Mumbwa and Itezhi-Tezhi districts under the chiefdoms of Shakumbila, Muwezwa, Mungaila, Nalubamba, Hamusonde, Choongo and Mwanachingwala.

The US$9 million projects will be implemented over a five-year period, with cooperating partners contributing US$700,000 annually towards restoration and management.

The projects are set to improve the management of about 622,900 hectares of protected areas, restore more than 3,000 hectares of wetlands and directly benefit at least 15,000 people through livelihood and capacity development initiatives.

Additionally, over 25,000 hectares will be placed under climate-resilient management to help communities withstand droughts, floods and other climate-related shocks.

Meet Lydia Muimui, a lead farmer from Malumbwe Community Forest Management Area in Mongu, who is helping her community adapt to changing seasons.

Lydia and fellow farmers are embracing climate-smart agriculture by growing drought-resistant crops like sorghum. As a lead farmer, she now shares knowledge with other community members, strengthening both livelihoods and local resilience.

“The sorghum grows well even with changing seasons. With my harvest, I can support my child’s education,” Lydia says.

With improved access to markets and sustainable practices, more farmers are joining the initiative, proving/demonstrating that lasting change is possible when communities are placed at the centre of conservation and development efforts. By supporting community-led solutions like these, WWF is helping protect ecosystems while ensuring people can thrive alongside nature today and for future generations.

This work is part of the Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities through Ecosystem Protection Project, jointly implemented by People in Need Zambia and WWF Zambia, with support from
Jersey Overseas Aid and Česká rozvojová agentura - CzechAid

At WWF, we believe in Together Possible, working with communities to protect nature while improving lives.
